Buyer's Guide: David Lee

For a team on a budget, Lee could be a better option than big men with bigger names

ESPN Insider is analyzing NBA free agents not named LeBron James (we covered him pretty extensively a few weeks ago, and there's even more coming every day on the LeBron Tracker) to determine what they're really worth to the teams chasing them this summer. OVERALL ASSESSMENT

CAREER SUMMARY

Despite being selected 30th overall in 2005, David Lee may end up as the NBA's highest-scoring Florida Gator of all time. Mike Miller currently has the edge in career points per game with 13.7 to Lee's 13.0, but that figures to change as Lee enters his prime and Miller phases out of the league.

With Carlos Boozer and Amare Stoudemire, Lee completes the free-agent triumvirate of scoring power forwards who can't play defense. However, Lee distinguishes himself from Boozer and Stoudemire with his will to improve his game and all-out effort that enamored the New York Knicks' fans.
Behind Lee's hustle, though, there's also a player who has made himself into an impressively skilled scorer and one of the most efficient big men in the league.
In his first three seasons in New York, Lee developed a reputation as a cleanup artist on the block without a complementary midrange game. That all changed this past season, when he shot nearly 400 jumpers between 16 and 23 feet -- more than his first three seasons combined -- and ranked among the league leaders with a 43.4 percent conversion rate, according to Hoopdata.com.
Lee unlocked his scoring potential just in time for free agency, which should allow teams with elite point guards to target him as a versatile screen counterpart and not just a glorified rebounder. According to Synergy Sports Technology, Lee is already one of the best pick-and-roll big men in the business, averaging 1.31 points after receiving the ball on a pick-and-roll, better than any of his counterparts in free agency. (That efficiency rate helps refute arguments that his stats are inflated by Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni's system.)
But even with his new scoring arsenal, Lee hasn't lost his touch on the boards. The former slam dunk contest winner at the McDonald's All-American game uses his underrated athleticism to position himself well for rebounding opportunities. At that point, it's all about effort -- something Lee rarely lacks. Only Dwight Howard collected more defensive rebounds than Lee this past season, and the Florida alumnus consistently finds himself among the league leaders in rebounding rate (the percentage of missed shots a player rebounds while on the floor).
Up to this point, Lee sounds as though he's worth a max contract. However, as is the case with Boozer and Stoudemire, Lee's defensive liabilities eclipse much of his offensive firepower.
Teams make it a nightly priority to abuse Lee on the block. In fact, according to Synergy, he faced more post-up situations per game than any other player in the NBA this past season -- and with good reason. More often than not, on 51.1 percent of post-ups, in fact, Lee either fails to stop his man on the block or sends him to the line, ranking him as one of the worst defending big men in the league among those who play big minutes.
Lee does have one advantage on D over the guys he'll be competing against for free agency dollars. "I think Lee has a better motor than [Stoudemire and Boozer]," one league exec said. "So he probably overcomes more of his deficiencies with his energy, athleticism and hustle."
But as much as Lee's work ethic has fueled the development of his midrange jumper, it has yet to transform his defensive game. As much as teams like effort, they pay for results. And for that reason, it's hard to see a team offering Lee near max money despite his great offensive efficiency.
One league exec put it this way: "I really don't feel confident that if you sign David Lee, your fans are going to say, 'Oh wow -- this two-year period of absolute futility was worth it.'"
But after considering the splash premium that Stoudemire likely will receive, Lee could be a real bargain this summer. By many measures, including John Hollinger's player efficiency rating, Lee even ranks as the better player of the two. And that's before one considers Lee's spotless injury record.
FINDING THE RIGHT FIT

Whereas Boozer and Stoudemire have played on the playoff stage year after year, Lee has never had that opportunity nor the personnel to propel him there. But that inexperience actually could be a draw for some teams.
"Lee didn't play with anyone who made him better, so that's intriguing," one league source said. "He's one of those guys who may have some latent upside just because you've never seen him play with a really good player."

? -- NBA executive
So who will bring out that hidden upside?
Even without a creative point guard to cultivate his scoring potential, Lee remains a fantastic option in the pick-and-roll. In that sense, he'd be a good fit in Phoenix should Stoudemire bolt and the Suns can find a taker for Leandro Barbosa and the $14 million left on his contract. Lee brings a lot of the same skills as Stoudemire, but he'll come at a discount.
Lee conceivably could pair up with Derrick Rose in Chicago, where he'd also give the Bulls the scoring big man they've long desired, albeit not one who'll go to work on the low block. And Joakim Noah could help cover up Lee's defensive weaknesses inside.
The New Jersey Nets also can complement Lee with an inside-out tandem of former All-Star point guard Devin Harris and budding star center Brook Lopez. New coach Avery Johnson could covet Lee and his grit over pricier alternatives while leaving room for another big signing. But the Nets may instead upgrade at Lee's position through the draft on Thursday night.
The Knicks may not possess the existing personnel to compete with the Bulls or the Nets, but they have the luxury of knowing Lee's game better than anyone else. And they finally have the cap room to surround him with the talent he deserves.
One thing's for sure: Lee won't bring a team a championship on his own. But he won't sink his next franchise with the weight of an undeserved contract, either.

Call a spade a spade!

It would be great to have a "home-grown" player on the floor when we finally make the playoffs.

Putting the rosey goggles away... and after mulling over these extensive stats...

Who doesn't think Lee is replaceable with a cheaper option?

Gallo, sh*t even Harrington could probably do the same thing playing the four- for much cheaper.

Let me stop you now and mention Lee actually played the Five most of the time. Note the fives in this league are WORSE than the fours- so please don't think Lee would be better at his natural position. Defensively... he wont... and the "experts" and quote says it all.

great post, good read. other than getting LeBronx or Boosh, keeping DLEE would be a major coup for Donnie, but I seriously doubt we stand a chance, after dissing the guy year after year. His agent is hell-bent on the big bucks, no matter how good the team improves.

worst-case scenario: DLEE goes to Bulls, along with LBJ = sheer torture for Knick fans!!

god bless David Lee, wherever he goes!
:gony:

I hope we can keep him. He wants to stay with New York and if you ask me hes just as good as Bosh and Probley better because he rarely misses a Game while Bosh missed like 12 this year.

He would work Awesome with LeBron aswell. LeBron would Drive in and Draw Defenders Leaving Gallo Open for the three or Lee open in the paint.

I would have to disagree with you on that... he is not better than Bosh... He is a good player playing in a system that gives him some decent chances to bloat his stats... please believe that if Bosh was here with this crap system, he would be averaging better

All Star
out of all the players in basketball that deserve to be on a good team...its David Lee.

All he needs is a decent point guard and a center that can help him on post defense and his team can easily win 40 games.

I hope that Lee stays here only if we can pair him another all star and get a good PG/Center combo for him...then it's worth it.

Red, I don't get why you have so much against David Lee. Every time the subject comes up, its nothing but bad in your eyes. 20/10 guys don't grow on trees, and David Lee is a "homegrown" Knick to boot. You always mention Lee's defense(or lack thereof), but he is a PF playing center, so of course he is going to suffer on the defensive end. Its invalid to compare his defensive stats to other 4's in the league because those guys aren't lining up against 5's night in and night out.

What David Lee pulled off in a Knick uniform last year was next to impossible being the #1 option on a very bad team. Opposing defense were geared to stop David Lee, the best, most constistent option on a very bad team. And to Lee's credit he still scorched opposing defenses by adding new phases to his game. That's a credit to D. Lee and definately a player to build around. Oh lest I forget, he was our only All-Star.

Everyone has that "well we didn't win with him" philosophy. What if the Celts had that same philosophy about Paul Pierce??? Than there is no "Big 3" and quite probably no championship. The idea is to recognize the pieces on your team you can build around. D. Lee is one of them. You will not be able to attract top flight free agents Gallo only. Trust me on that. I hope we can keep D. Lee in the fold.

Please don't overstate or misconstrue my position. I've already mentioned why an anticipated stance of "Lee played the five" is irrational. I'll keep it simple...

1. If WE (the Knicks organization) REALLY valued Lee, he would of been signed.

2. Lee is scouted as a FOUR going forward so that would mean as bad as his defense is... against BETTER FOURS HE WILL BE WORSE!

3. Some mention what we've been through since Lee has been here and that impact or lack there of to THE BOTTOM LINE is now valid. As good or gaudy as Lee's PERSONAL stats have been, it hasn't translated into wins for the team.

This stance of Lee support to me is a combination of him being a Homer, and a realization that the MAJOR FA PF's on the market PROBABLY won't be here. It's preparation for the worse. And thats what the stats have showed, that defensively Lee has been one of the worse. Why do you think we have been targeting upgrades for two years now?!

4. He will never become more athletic

5. He doesn't suck, he's just not what we should be looking for IMO.

I could go on about defensive and basketball philosophy regarding "big men", and question YOUR opinion regarding Lee, but I respect that, you can't respect my stance that after what I (we've) been through...

that my (and hopefully Donnie's) sights are set higher. Lee can't be that good or else he wouldn't be viewed as a "LAST RESORT", once snubbed (offered one deal that he turned down) FA, supposed All-Star, league wide coveted big but is mentioned last compared to EVERY FA out there.

Like the economy (supply & demand), Lee obviously ISN'T in demand. The league and consensus proves this. Believe me I'm not alone. Experts and professional GM's with years of experience have neglected to even attempt to bid for HIS services. Accept why and you will understand MY stance.

One.

The day we find out our All-Star PF-David Lee signed with the next NBA team, we should know then the direction we are heading in will not be an improvement from last 2 seasons.

David Lee is ambidextrous able to catch/pass/shoot/and rebound with "both" hands. His NBA skills I.Q. has improved each season to the point where his talents improve and compliments his D.League/rookie/tier-2 teammates performance.
I didnt see Bosh, Amare, Dirk, and Boozer on thier teams be able to do alot of things David Lee has done for this Knick Franchise.

David Lee has become a very scary FA to keep in this market still averaging a 55% fg percentage, improving to a 20-11 stat player without PG-Duhon help this season. Which mean he hasnt lost his touch for scoring without the ball, or rebounding without a bigman teammate screening off oponents rebounders (3 offensive rebounds per game for 4 years straight).
What more do u want from a "WINNING" PF????

I would like a PF/C that plays defense please. You can keep boozer and Stat tho.

If my options are Lee, Stat and Boozer I'll keep Lee. But give me a big man that can play defense like Bosh or Haywood and i'll take 'em over Lee in a heartbeat.

Maybe Lee will work on his defense all summer like he did with his jumper last summer. That would probably be the most career savvy thing he could do in the off season. I find it hard to beleive that Lee will be here next season, unless we get a Lebron and Joe Johnson signing.... even then i am not sure we could keep Lee at what he will be worth.

Too bad OKC can't afford him. They would be a machine if they could add Lee. Same with ORL.

I hope we keep Lee. Prefer that to Amar'e or Joe Johnson.
