Official Andy Rautins Thread

How many of you posting on this thread have actually watched this kid play instead of reading draftexpress or watching youtube videos?

From what I've seen from watching him play:

-His athleticism is under rated.
-The kid is a leader especially when he is telling guys like Wes what to do.
-His perimeter defense is good.
-He has a very nice stroke.
-Wonderful work ethic

In no way am I saying he is a starter or an all-star. Chances of a 2nd rounder belonging in those categories are a shot in a dark.

How many of you thought David Lee of all people was going to be an all-star forward from watching him in college?

His athleticism is less then stellar, and he had a basic offensive game. It was his attitude, work ethic, and hustle that has made him surpass anyone's expectations of him.

Dude he's slow.....he's not quick for college...how can he be quick in the NBA. That translates into EVERY facet of the NBa game.

Speed/explosion/body types are my #1 things when evaluating a player. Character is my #2.

Headcases with crazy athleticism are better gambles in my opinion. If getting a star free agent this offseason is not guarenteed, i don't see why we aren't drafting gambles as opposed to role players.

All I can say. You guys will be surprised. Andy Rautins is a TEAMPLAYER with high Basketball IQ. Luke Walton suck but Lakers keep him year after year for what he brings to the table. A team needs a guy like that. Rautins is that guy..

Here's a profile of his dad Leo the 14th pick in the 1983 draft. His dad was a bust although he had knee problems and you that old saying about the apple not falling too far from the tree.

Leo R. Rautins (born 20 March 1960 in Toronto, Ontario) is a former professional basketball player, the current head coach of the Canadian national men's basketball team, and an NBA analyst for the Toronto Raptors.

Rautins was a star in high school for St. Michael's College School in Toronto, the University of Minnesota for his freshman year of college, and Syracuse University for three seasons, the autumn of 1980 through to the spring of 1983. As a Golden Gopher, Rautins was named first-team All Big-Ten rookie, averaging 8.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.9 assists a game. As a member of the Orangemen, he averaged 12.1 points, 5.0 assists, and 6.2 rebounds. He is the first player ever to record a triple-double in Big East play, accomplishing the feat twice in the span of a month during his senior year. He was named All Big East third team and Honorable Mention All American that year.

The 6 ft 8 in, 215 lb Rautins was the first Canadian ever drafted in the first round of the NBA Draft going 17th overall to the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1983 Draft. He was a disappointment however as an NBA player. Hampered by knee problems, he played in 28 games as a rookie with the Sixers, averaging just 7 minutes a game, 1.5 points, 1 assist, 1.2 rebounds, and 0.7 turnovers. He went on to play 4 games for the Atlanta Hawks the following season, averaging a mere 3 minutes a contest before leaving the NBA to play in Europe. Rautins played in Italy for Serie A1 team Banco Roma (1985-1986) and Serie A2 team Citrosil Verona (1986-1987), in France with Pau Orthez (1989-90 and 1992), and in Spain (1991-92). At the time of his retirement, he had undergone a total of 14 knee operations.

When Rautins made his debut for the Canada senior national team in early 1977 while still age 16, he was the youngest player in the team's history. This record would last until August 2010, when Rautins named Toronto-area high school phenom Kevin Pangos, also 16 but younger than Rautins was at his debut, to the squad for a tour of Italy.[1] Rautins completed his national team playing career in 1992 as Canada was eliminated in the Tournament of the Americas, the Basketball qualifying tournament for the Barcelona Olympics.

Upon retirement, Rautins became a basketball commentator, most notably with the Toronto Raptors television network. A member of Canada's Basketball Hall of Fame, he was named head coach of the Canadian National Team in February, 2005. Rautins' son Andy is a graduate of Jamesville-Dewitt High School and a former member of the Syracuse Orange men's basketball team, now drafted by the New York Knicks of the NBA. He and his wife have three other sons.

All I know is this - his athleticism isn't all that high.

We still have use for him though. He's a good 3 point shooter, and that would fit in D'Antoni's system...but that doesn't excuse not picking up Willie Warren or Solomon Alabi, who are good players at positions we needed.

If we're lucky he'll be OK. He's a hard worker, though.

Word is teams were scared off of Alabi b/c of a medical issue. Of course the same story applied to D-Blaire last year.

No matter how you twist it, it was a crap pick because we needed size. Not happy 3 point leprechauns.

I don't care how good he is, we don't need him.

Wrong, we lost many games because we had no sharp shooters which resulted in Gallo over shooting and getting a brick every game. We need sharp shooters, especially in this system, BUT getting two guards surprised me. Size is our biggest need.

Idiot hey need role players and court leaders. How many court leaders do we have on the Knicks? None. Rautins is a born leader. This shows you have never watched a Cuse game. I only went to about 10 or so this past season! BORN LEADER, FUTURE NBA 6 MAN! We needed Rautins.. Really wanted him. He is a stud. You idiots. Don't question Walsh
Smh. Just smh

that is sooo damn foolish and stupid...We lost many games because we didn't have sharp shooters?? Which games were you watching? we lost games because we had NO INTERIOR DEFENSE.... That is the reason we lost most of our games, the other portion of the games we lost was because we had no perimeter defense... and then finally we had hardly any interior scoring... we made the 2nd most 3 point fgs last year... Maybe if the "system" was geared for ever and their mother to take 3s maybe the Knicks would be in a better position... but thats to much to ask for a team ran by d'antoni... This is a WORTHLESS PICK as worthless as your post

Your post is very ignorant. And by the way I watched almost every Knick game.
YOU have to understand Mike D...he loves to jack up shots, primarily three point shots which drove me insane all year. he is not going to make his team a power house shotblocking team that feeds guys in the post, it's not the way he wants his team to play even though we would be very effective that way.... SO IF HE IS GOING TO JACK UP SHOTS WE MIGHT AS WELL GET PLAYERS LIKE RAUTINS WHO CAN MAKE THE SHOTS.

The guys who shot all of them? Chandler(who shot under 30% from downtown most of the season), Gallo(who went down hill after the all star break from downtown), Douglas? decent, Harrington(streaky), Walker was the only consistent three point shooter that never had a slump.

I agree that interior defense and not being able to block shots killed us....but a close second can honestly be our inability to shoot at a high percentage. So many games I shook my head because no one wanted the ball because no one was a sharp shooter except a hot Gallo, streaky harrington who sucked more than not, and Walker, so we wound up throwing up bricks. If you can't do it in the post then you better get sharp shooters to spread the floor and knock down shots from outside. We didn't even have that. If we got lucky we'd go on a hot streak, which didn't happen alot.

Paul makes a point, but that doesnt change the fact Rautins is ASS...he's NO GOOD and wasn't even in the consensus top 60-80 prospects in this draft. If we wanted him, we could of signed him as an UFA. Thats POOR GM skills by Walsh, and those are the facts.

how is this guy gonna get his shot off in the NBA. No athleticism....way below average first step, no real consistent moves. Add to that we Have NOOOO Point Guard as of yet. We don't know if David Lee is comin back, and we have no center.

You could go and sign any D Leagers 3 point specialist. Remember Von Wafer on the rockets....that dude shot 400 % from 3 point 2 years ago. HOwever he is out the leauge cuz he SUCKS at the NBA level. Terrible pick....we should have just drafted all big men, hoping one was athletic enough to play at a decent level in D'Antonis system.

But aren't their enough sharp shooters in the league to fill that roll as experienced players? Anthony Morrow is a perfect example of a pursuable player for NY. Cheap, snipes, handles well and is athletic.

Size is rare in general in the league these days. Shooters are not. We needed size and went with a second round shooting guard. The average height of our team must be like..... What? 6'8"?! So I still say bad pick, better options were there.

I can't say he's a bad player because I haven't watched him. But he's still not the right choice for a team, that at the time, only had Curry in the front court.

I hope Rautins proves me wrong though.

He is a role player, not a future starter. His IQ and shooting ability (and he has decent handles too) will help him be productive at times. I don't see him more than a 15-20 minute per game guy.

I don't like this pick, but hopefully, he can prove worthy of a draft pick. I expect Rautins to be undrafted.

I doubt this kid even makes the team honestly. Douglas can shoot the ball as good as him...Walker is a good 3pt shooter too.

this is why we should get Kevin Prichard as our GM and stop having 69 year old Donnie doing everything at half speed.

He needs help with business management.
