Grunwald Named Executive VP and GM

One of the smartest GM's around, shunned the NBA to get his MBA and law degree. He'll bring professionalism and integrity to that Knicks front office. Good move by the Knicks.

Congrats Glen, well deserved. Here's hoping Woodson's next, I agree totally.

As for our FAs, I'd love to bring 'em all back but how? Anyone know exactly how we can do it? Can we even do it?

Let's assume Lin gets the full MLE or more (I believe we can match any offer). The cat's out of the bag pretty much with JR -- I think he's gonna want to test the waters. Rumor has it that he probably declines his $2.5M player option -- he'll be looking for more than that. Someone's gonna give it to him too if we don't..Novak's gonna get paid decent money -- what $2-4M, in that range? The man is leading the league in 3-pt shooting... And then there's Fields. Landry probably gets paid somewhere in between what JR and Novak get (closer to Novak). So where's this all leave us?

Are we allowed to exceed the cap to retain all of these guys? Can we match any offer for each? Not sure but I was under the impression that we'll be able to do whatever we need to retain Lin but not for the other guys. Need verification -- maybe I'm wrong on this..Anyone know how we'd be able to bring all 4 guys back? Just curious..

feh. I think Gruntwall is easily manipulated by D'oh-lan, just a pawn in the Knicks org. agreed, Tyson was a phenomenal pickup, Knicks got lucky with Lin. as everyone at KO says, let's see what happens with Wood Son, and how the grunt manages to keep what we've got. best of luck to him.

I've come up with the perfect solution

Lin- Qualifying offer, then in 2013 he gets a huge ling term deal, think Rondo's deal

Fields- Qualifying offer, then in 2013 he gets 4yr deal for about 16mil

Novak- vets minimum, not worth much more

Smith- MLE very key to our team with Shumpert becoming the starting 2 we need a guy who can come off the bench and create his own shot for the 2nd unit

Problem is none of them have bird rights, Lin and Fields' kick in next year which is why I think they can wait 1 more year while we lock up JR, Novak's vet minimum is 1.7mil which is fine for him, add in a 1 million dollar bonus if he shoots over 40% from 3 and his deal is fine

If we lose out on guys here are some alternatives

Lin- DJ Augustine(FA), Raymond Felton(FA) or Tyshawn Taylor(Draft)

Fields- Jeff Green(FA) or Danny Green

Smith- Reggie Williams(trade), Dion Waiters(Draft) or Jamal Crawford

Novak- Ray Allen

I'd love to draft Taylor and Waiters, sign Allen and Novak back and then sign and trade Fields for a big man like Tyler Hansbrough to replace JJ as our energy guy at the 4/5

Agree with most of this other than us signing Allen, he is a stingy prick and will still want a big deal. And where are we getting these draft picks from?
Novak deserves the Vet Min, love him but he is getting a bit overrated playing in the big city. Plus his role is perfect here and I think he would be fairly useless in alot of other situations.

Also read a report somewhere that he is very thankful that NY gave him a chance once he was waived by Spurs and wants to stay.

Good post.

I think you underrate Novak. Jason Kapano signed a 24M/4yr deal as a 3pt specialist a while back so some team is going to offer him more than the vets min. Got to resign him, look at how many games he's hit big shots and he's a fan favorite, hopefully we can sign him with our bi-annual exception.

JR's a lost cause, no way we don't have to use a big chunk of the MLE on Lin. Lin is not going to take a NY qualifying offer of 1M if other teams are offering MLE money. With Curry's ankle problems, I bet the Warriors offer him the full MLE.

Don't forget , it was Grunwald that gave these guys a chance, after they were thrown to the curb. (Novak and Lin)

He is a seasoned GM.
Now that he sees he scored with them, he'll do everything to keep em here.. even if it means restructuring Amarknee and Melo's contracts..

There is no qualifying offer for Lin. The most any team can offer him is 5 mil so Knicks pretty much can't lose him unless they don't want to use the full MLE on him.

JR's fate is up to JR. (player option) Most likely will opt out though. Grunwald would have to convince Lin to take much less and give JR a raise to keep him. Lin, being the younger player and coming off surgery could be convinced to wait one more year for his multi-year payday.

Novak, depending on what Lin/JR is paid, can either take the mini mid level or vets min.

Fields has his bird rights so he's fine

Knicks have no problem giving JJ the vets min again

Davis could come back if he only costs us the vets min

Douglas would be out of the league next season but some idiots decided to extend his contract. Money wasted.

Im pretty sure we'll see BDiddy in NYK next season... he's gonna be making good money from his contract in Cleveland next season as well.. he wanted to play in NY so he'll probably take the vets min again next season.

I hope Woody gets extended (can I say that? woody extended?) but theknicksblog reported more swirling rumors about Phil Jackson today, alledgedly knicks brass are preparing to offer him a monster contract if Woody doesn't get us past the first round. Number thrown out was 4 years 50 mill, now I realize this is all BS until something goes down and pen hits paper, but while I am intrigued but Phil, I feel Woody has shown he deserves a shot, sure he was with the team in training camp, but couldn't run everything his own way until recently, and results were decidedly favorable even with the limited time in charge

If guys play hard on D and Melo maintains his stroke, We'll beat MIA/CHI and Woody will get extended.

There's an article on Yahoo about hiring Phil Jackson to a 50M deal if the Knicks don't get out of the 1st round. Grunwald would be a fool to hire PJ for that kind of dough.
