2021 Knicks Summer League

Quickley shot poorly today, but he had 8 assists. Becoming more of a playmaker definitely a Summer League emphasis for him. Couple sequences where he realized he missed an open guy (generally Toppin) heading to the hoop and was visibly frustrated with himself.

The Knicks SL team are weak-weak in the same position on offense/defense as Thibs 2021-22 Knicks rotation team .. PG & SF !!!
The Knicks need a PG coach like Jason Kidd.

I know its the first game .. but if McBride, Grimes, Selden, and Vildoza give us another performance like today .. Our Knicks scouts need to be FIRED !!!

This is the schedule for the games. Looking forward to seeing if Vildoza looks NBA ready. Read that Grimes is as good as Knox right now, if he is he should excel in SL like Knox did.

NEW YORK, NY (July 28, 2021) ? The NBA announced today the game and broadcast schedules for MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2021, which will take place Aug. 8-17 at Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The New York Knicks matchups are as follows:
Sunday, August 8 vs. Toronto - 4:30PM ET on ESPN2
Wednesday, August 10 at LA Lakers - 10:00PM ET on ESPN2
Friday, August 13 at Detroit - 8:00PM ET on NBA TV
Saturday, August 14 - 8:00PM ET on ESPN2
The team will also play a fifth game on either Monday, August 16 or Tuesday, August 17.
Vildoza was meh in his first NBA appearance. He had a poor Olympics and didn?t get many minutes today but I expect more from a seasoned pro playing against kids. When he was in the game, Dice had him playing off-guard and not PG, highlight of the game for him was him getting stripped by Scottie Barnes SMH.

I could only stomach the first half? they looked so bad I couldn?t waste another hour on a beautiful day watching them play.

Grimes and McBride made their first shot, then looked awful offensively the rest of the half. They both missed layups too.

Vildoza forced a charge then fed a beautiful assist on an inbounds pass with 0.01 left in the first Q. But nothing much other than that.

Kid from Texas looks like he could be a decent project. Especially if we trade Mitch.

IQ couldn?t have had a worse first half. He probably shot 0-10.

The lone bright spot was Obi?.

But, it?s still depressing to think TOR had a bunch of no names and couldn?t hit a bucket the first Q and IQ/Obi couldn?t even get team to a lead. They should?ve been up by 20.

Think about that? How to get excited about Obi and IQ when they can?t even be competing against TOR SL team. Oh boy.

But? the lead today is:

Knicks appear to have pulled another Knits or Kevin Knox out of their hat. Jalen Johnson had 20/10 for ATL and looked legit. Grimes? He just looked like another G League guy.

And Sharife Cooper looks a lot better than McBride. So, even drafting behind us, ATL got the 2 better players.

Anyway, I wouldn?t depend on this front office drafting us into a title contender?. Leon?s first 2 draft classes can?t even win a SL game.

Knicks shot 7-40 from downtown. Unwatchable stuff. They finished strong bc they began 3-33.

?The biggest surprise for New York was the play of rookie Jericho Sims. The No. 58 pick in last month?s draft looked like a damn steal on Sunday, with 12 points on 6-6 shooting and 8 rebounds.? P&T

Front office was insistent on getting 3 point shooting, defense, and ball handling. Grimes and McBride should be solid role players, but obviously upside isn?t there.

It just felt like taking Knox over Michael Porter? and made worse that he went to ATL.

I think they did it for cap space, which makes me sick bc what?s the point of taking a lesser player for a few mil in cap space, especially when nobody wants our cap space?.

Jalen Johnson is clearly the higher upside talent. But, we root for the Knicks, so draft blunders are par for the course.

Good news is, like you said, instead of major swing and misses, hopefully we at least drafting average replacement level professionals.

Quickley did a great job getting the ball down low to Obi & Simms to control the offensive paint .. we got nothing from McBride, Grimes, and Vildoza, really nothing.
What we fans, and Quickley, Obi, Sims, needed in their lineup today was a SF Jalen Johnson for the Knicks win.

Something is bad in the Knicks FO .... when their 4th pick at 58th is turning out to be a better selection than their first 3 moves in the draft. SMH
When we all knew the Knicks needed to select one of the 5 best SF in the 2021 draft-class at 19 or 21 to forefill the Knicks big weakness at SF left by Bullock & Knox.

Barnes & Flynn tandem up great today to show leadership for the wn ..the same tandem leadership i was looking for Obi & Quickley to get out of our GLeague draft players.

Jalen fell in their laps, as MPJr did, and they made the same mistake. Trading back to preserve less than 3 mil in cap space. Just awful.

IQ did some quality work running the offense, with his 8 assists? and that clearly was his point of emphasis? so, in that regard, he looked good.

But his role is gonna be 6th man spark plug?. Unless, off course, if and when, Walker and or Rose get hurt

Not having someone who knows talent is a very big problem with Knicks. It has been shown from the moment C. Gaines left the F.O. This is another one of Perry doing.

As for MPjr the problem with that draft was they didn't use all of Gaines advice. He told the F.O. to trade back with the Clippers for there two 1st rounder(12 & 13) I think. Correct me if I'm wrong. We could have had both Knox and MPjr with MRob being drafted in the 2nd round. I asked Mills about that and he said, Yeah, I heard that was going around online.

Quickley out of control, playing like it?s a video game. He?s taking shot after shot from deep 3, but he?s hitting enough of them to spark us to a 3rd quarter lead.

I love Quickley, I really do, but ball movement so much better without him on the court. Quickley playing like he?s Trae Young before Nate McMillan turned him into a more efficient player.

I really like what Miles McBride is giving us. Efficient shooting, good ball movement, consistent defense.

IQ isn?t a PG, no matter how hard they try?. He?s an undersized SG, whose best role is that of 6th man Lou Williams style.

Grimes 2-10. NYK made a ginormous blunder drafting Grimes over Jalen Johnson. It makes you wonder what they were thinking? Were there flags that took JJ off their draft board? Grimes might not even make the team?

Most felt Grimes was a mid second round pick. Fact that NyK took him 25 is depressing, and the fact they passed on JJ and went with QG? it doesn?t bode well for Rose?s ability to identify talent in the draft.

Maybe he can defend and maybe he can grow to knock down an open look? but not much else there.

Kevin Knox made the All-NBA Summer League team in 2018. Summer League doesn?t mean that much for a player?s entire future career.

I think you?re overreacting to 2 Summer League games.

Seen enough hoops to know it when you see it?. He?ll make Kevin Knox look like Steph Curry.

This was the 49Th ranked prospect by most accounts? we took him bc we could save money, and bc he had a good practice with us.

Jalen Johnson was by far the superior player and 29 other teams would?ve taken JJ over Grimes.

Given Ny draft history and how they acquired Grimes? no reason to give player or team benefit of doubt.

But, we can coach him up and maybe down the road you have a bench wing that can play 15 minutes, defend and knock down an open look when you pass him the ball.

Just don?t expect much else tho or you?ll be disappointed.
