We are WEAK at the SG position

I'm interested to see if this Chris Copeland could be an answer for us at the 2G, if he has enough skills for the position. I liked what I saw in that Euro clip where he went off for 45 pts. Does he have enough skill to play some 2. That's my question...Kinda reminds me of Jae Crowder a little bit and I had the same question about Crowder heading into the draft -- if we took him, could he play some 2...Don't know if Copeland's as good defensively as Crowder but he looks to be a better jumpshooter. Over 40% from 3 this yr in Europe. Copeland's numbers were very good across the board in fact..We'll find out starting tomorrow.

Going back to Novak...

Seems everyone agrees Novak would fit well on the offense.

Regarding playing defense on shooting guards, I think it will be fine. He won't be a spectacular defender but he should be able to get his hand in people's faces. His slight height advantage over the average SG will significantly help him.

If the SG passes him you still have Chandler down low to pick him up. (Clearly he has to guard against the pass to the open center though.)

I think Novak's lack of real quickness will be a weakness though for transition offense. None of the starters really have the speed to capitalize on transition plays which will hurt us. That alone actually may be a good reason to start Smith.

I just wanna clarify, we DO have the BAE I learned, however if we use it we would go over the 74mil hard cap and the Knicks have elected not to use it.
That sucks, not that a 2M BAE was going to get you Jason Terry but it would be easier to spend then trying to work a deal for Gadz expiring.

Just saw this tweet from Hahn

Why Landry Fields could remain a Knick: may be the best SG available for Knicks $ limitations and the contract may help in a future trade.

Lol lol lol

Lets take a good look at the Knicks team we are improving.....especially Landry Fields vs JR.Smith.
Knicks vs the Championship team
Do anyone remember the Knicks players average FGA per game and FG% in the 5 postseason games vs Miami Heat?

Name - fga - percentage
Melo - 25 -41%
Smith - 16 -31%
Stat - 9 - 56%
Fields - 6 - 48%
Davis - 6 - 47%
Tyson - 5 - 44%
Bibby - 5 - 39%
Jorts - 3 - 44%
Novak - 2 - 44%

Do anyone believe having Kidd & Lin at the point wouldve change the above statistics for the better of the team?

Does the statistics look like Melo/Stat/JR.Smith being our first 3 options on offense were equal at sharing the ball with each other?

They say Stat had to break a glass with his hand after the 2nd game just to get certain teammates to pass him the ball so he could take 13 shots in the 4th game, rather than the 7 shots per in the first two games?

They say the Knicks 3 point specialist Novak was covered by defenders, and was only left undefended when the ball was in Melo hands?
I have to watch MSG channel to see if that is true...

Does Melo & JR.Smith statistics above match the same postseasons statistics the two players had on the Denver Nuggets for 5 seasons?

Let get my two cents in here.... Again I think there is a over reactionary thing going on here.... Miami just won a chip with Mike Miller playing 2 guard. Let that sink in for a minute....Sorry A$$ Mike Miller. The boy played one good game all-season and came off looking like a hero.... My point is that when you have scorers like a Lebron or a MELO, yes MELO Knick fans, you don't need a killer 2 guard. All you need is a knockdown shooter for the penetration and kick. Novak is good for that and JR was cheap for his upside...JR gets on my nerves because he looks so good sometimes, jumps out of the gym, so much upside, but can shoot you out of a game in a heartbeat, which is how you end up in CHINA(that's right starbury fans tried to tell y'all) :)

1. What is your point? I was making a case to Kiyaman that signing Fields is idiotic because he is not worth the money and the luxury tax would be insane.

2. My love for Smith? He is a good SG that we are getting for nothing because he loves NY. Teams knew he would resign, why didn't teams offer Novak a deal? Why did Lin get only one offer sheet? Come on bro you don't think teams know not to waste their time with players that will def resign?

Smith is better than Fields by far in every category. And we are paying half the price...if that is not a bargain I dont know what is...

So tell me again...what is your point?

Knowing what we have in Dolan why do u care about the luxury tax....simple question if u can have fields and it does not effect us in any way other that having him why would u now.........We know 20 million is too much....but it does not effect our cap except for luxury tax...

To answer your questions...
Novak did ZERO in the playoffs....without him being open for a 3 point shot he is worthless.....look who Miami got Allen and Lewis....why bother with Novak...

JR LOVES NY ???????? nobody offered him a penny......He has a very low Bball IQ, holds the ball for 20 seconds at a time and chucks no matter if he is hitting or now.....You are so dillusional when it comes to smith...

where did the "Novak at SG" point of view come from?

this is so random... has anyone on the Knicks or any beat reporter even suggested this?

I mean, if he didnt have to play defense, then it would be a nice idea...

but, there is no way he is remotely able to guard a Kobe Bryant

no lateral quickness to stay with a 2guard

he loses his value chasing guys like Joe Johnson or Dwayne Wade around multiple screens to be too tired to be effective on the offensive side

We are paying Novak for what he is: a 3pt threat when Amare or Melo go to the bench.

Why are we trying to make an argument for him at SG when this will never happen

What we need:

1. The shooting guard, also known as the "2", is usually the team's best shooter, and typically is able to consistently hit long range shots (of 20 feet or more). (Hey, Novak does fit this specific criteria)

2. Besides being able to shoot the ball, shooting guards tend to have good ball-handling skills and the ability to drive the ball to the net, often creating their own shots off the dribble. (Definitely not Novak)

3. A versatile shooting guard will have good passing skills, allowing them to assume point guard responsibilities. (Nope, Novak fails this one again)

4. Typical NBA shooting guards are 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) to 6 feet 7 inches (2.01 m) (Novak at 6'10" is at an disadvantage because he lacks lateral quickness against smaller guards)

Honestly, I would take a serious look at Michael Redd. He did have some good games after he came back last season and I think he is worth a vet min contract.

The Bulls are looking at him, why we are not?

Chicago is looking to add some offense this off-season as the team will begin the upcoming NBA season without injured point guard Derrick Rose, and several rumors have circulated lately on players the Bulls could bring in for help.

Fox Sports has reported that Chicago is looking at veteran shooting guard Michael Redd as an answer for scoring. The veteran played in Phoenix last year and averaged just over eight points per game, but he played just 15 minutes per contest, and a change of scenery could give him more playing time that would equate to a bump in his scoring average.

The 32-year-old was one of the better shooters in the league before injuries hit, and though he played sparingly last year, he could give the Bulls a good short-term answer on offense and a veteran that can help with leadership until Rose returns.

Chicago needs some low-cost help, and Redd played for the veteran minimum last year and won't command much more for the upcoming NBA season, and the front office would be wise to add the veteran to give the Bulls some much-needed scoring for the upcoming basketball season.

JR.Smith is a loser .. he is only good for a running street ball team that wins on outscoring oponents 116 -124 scoring game.
Havnt u ever played ball against an all offensive team (JR.Smith), or an all defensive team (Fields & Shump)? the winning money $$$ always go on the defensive team.....u seen how Charmers defense had Smith shoot at 31%, while Battier/Lebron/and D.Wade shadowed Novak.

We don't need a SG that will take a ton of shots - we already have too few to go around between Melo, Stat and Lin. We just need one that can play good defense and hit a few outside shots to spread the floor. Landry Fields did neither of those things. If Shump can continue to improve his outside shot, he could be the guy (his 3-point shooting dramatically improved the last couple months of the season - perhaps he can keep it going). I actually like JR in the starting 5 because he does exactly that - shoot 3's and plays good on the ball D. Obviously, he won't get nearly as many shots as when he was the primary scorer coming off the bench, but that's probably a good thing. We basically just need someone to hold us over until Shump comes back, at which point JR will probably go back to the bench.

Kiya, you too harsh bro. I feel JR is better suited off the bench with the other starters we have, but you going too far.

I think JR is happy in NYK, and still has the chance to grow as a player.

According to Jared Zwerling, Smith has spent most of his offseason in Los Angeles, working out with renowned trainer Idan Ravin.

That to me is very positive and we should have faith that the guy will be productive this season.

Chicago never shouldve let Ben Gordon go....all the SG Chicago got after Jordan has been tier-3 accept for Gordon.....RIP is injury prone and taking a chance on Redd is .......

Remember coach Byron Scott kicked JR out of the lockerroom, Hornets traded JR to Chicago, and before JR got off the plane in Chicago they handed JR a ticket to Denver. Denver had no defense at PG/SG/SF making Denver a winning regular season team and a losing playoff team.

all true.. but he has matured since then... still has space to grow, but I feel he's progressed!!!

He's on the team, so let's back him up...

As I said, he's better off the bench, we still need a starting 2guard that can catch and shoot consistently

Hes matured since then ?
His China team says he blew off every rule they had, He is busy tweeting naked pictures of women from his hotel room and then after 36 minutes and zero rebounds, assists, blocks and steals not to mention 4-17 shooting he tweets right after the game how its goodbye NY...

The guy is a moron.....THIS IS WHY NO TEAM EVEN MADE HIM AN OFFER.....

u right .. Im not worried about JR & Melo sporactic selfishness any longer .. Jason Kidd is running the Knicks now.
I just want Lin/Fields/Novak to get a fair chance to evolve their chemistry skills around Kidd/Camby/Tyson/Amare

Folds

this has turned into an awesome thread, Kiyaman's best ever!

the question is, can JR Smith be a starting SG, or is Laundry Folds the better choice? money is not really a question, with early turd rights being the case, and Alan Hahn agrees his contract can help Knicks in the future. Dolan is a multi-mega-millionaire, re-signing (!) a Laundry clean is no skin off the Knicks backs towards signing someone else, so why the f*ck not? who cares if Toronto gave him more than he's worth, the big picture is keeping a team together for more than a year, keeping the players together so they can gel, and letting Landry discover the Force Fields (thanks OBM) he can be. He's got it in him.

JR Smith cannot be a starting SG, taking shots away from Melo. Junior Swish is more of a ball hog than anyone on the team, and although he has skills, he is a chucker. if he practiced as much as he tweeted, perhaps he'd be a better player come playoff time. if you read his tweets, he's not smart, not sophisticated or educated, he's a thug. he's a backup who can bring a spark to the 2nd unit.

If Knicks do not get a worthy starting SG, I'm all for Laundry folding back into the lineup. he'll be WAY happy, Lin will be happy, the Knicks will have their starting five back for the first time in a decade...(?) or so it seems.

IMHO.
