Game Preview

The San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks took decidedly different tacks to get to the opening of the 2019-20 NBA season, which begins for both on Wednesday night when the teams square off in San Antonio.

The traditionally non-flashy Spurs mostly stood pat in the player department, and the Knicks, coming off a franchise-worst-tying 17-65 campaign, all but remade their roster.

With a core of center/forward LaMarcus Aldridge, shooting guard DeMar DeRozan and point guard Derrick White, San Antonio went 48-34 last season and pushed the second-seeded Denver Nuggets to seven games before bowing out in the first round of the playoffs.

It was the 22nd consecutive trip to the playoffs for the Spurs, which extended their NBA record.

San Antonio's biggest addition, third-year guard Dejounte Murray, was with the team last year but missed the entire campaign with a knee injury suffered in the preseason. On Monday, the team signed Murray to a contract extension reported to be for four years and $64 million.

The Spurs added forwards Trey Lyles and DeMarre Carroll to bolster the frontcourt and resigned Rudy Gay.

San Antonio can send a variety of lineups to the court depending how it wants to match up with its opponents. The roster is loaded with guards and contains a mix of veterans and youthful players, all fully invested into coach Gregg Popovich's defense-first scheme.

"It feels good going into the season with the depth that we have, the bodies that we have and being dynamic and be able to in any combination that we feel fits," DeRozan said. "Everybody is understanding of their role, their plays, and the type of style that we have to play, and is aware and understands what is asked of them."

Popovich was asked last week if he had seen any improvement in the team's defense since the start of training camp.

"Not yet," he replied in his typical fashion. "We still stink."

Don't expect that situation to continue. New York could face the brunt of the Spurs' continuing steps toward improvement.

The Knicks have fallen short of the postseason for the past six years and haven't played meaningful games after March 1 in five of those. In 2018-19, New York's record was the league's worst.

That dismal performance earned the Knicks the third overall pick in the draft, which turned into former Duke star RJ Barrett, who is just 19 years old. New York also signed free agent Julius Randle, and those two players, along with Dennis Smith Jr., could be difference-makers for the Knicks.

"We're building,'' Randle said. "It's going to take time, but I like where we're going. We just have to have patience. The process is going to take time, but we're going to get there.''

Knicks coach David Fizdale said he has a good mix of talented players.

"I don't have a gauge or number, but I do think this team can be a lot better,'' Fizdale said. "The guys all add a different skill set that we didn't have before. We added more shooting, couple more playmakers, we got some guys that can post. I feel like this team is maybe further ahead than last year's team.''

We?re the biggest underdogs of the night with Spurs favored by 10.5 points. Be great to get a surprise win to start the season. Hoping to see a big game from Marcus Morris.

Let?s go!

I hope Fiz relies heavily on the vets tonight... Let kids earn their minutes.

I also hope we press fill court all night. Tired legs go to bench for rest. Keep pressure and effort all night!

LeBron looked old last night. We have 82 games to convince AD to leave LA for MSG. A long shot.... but we can only control what we can control. Be good and good things follow!

Wsup Rady .... Thanks for the Game-Thread .. Its been a long off-season where all the Knicks dreams did not come true. The Spurs are giving 10 points over us in our first game of the season .. must be home-court advantage, because we swipe their plans for a Derozan/Morris/Aldridge lineup.

Someone let me know ....
Who is streaming MSG Knicks Games in the upcoming season ???

I see nothing good out of that starting lineup. You got DSJ and RJ that didn't earn their position. What do you think Morris saying? What do you think Frank is saying? Hate say it but what you think Trier is saying? There will be talk real soon as for favoritism. Then you going to have everybody playing their own individual game.
Forgot something...if they told Payton the PG was his that goes to management not keeping their word. Trying to sign a F.A. good luck.

The signs that show what is wrong is starting RJ at SF and not SG. WHY NO?? That the position he played in preseason. I said in another post that Ellington and Frank is your back court until Dotson is 100%.

no doubt AD will come here next summer - to partner with KD and irving... but he will be on the other side of the bridge...

Pregame show about to start. I could end up being wrong, but sounds like Portis, Randle, Morris, RJ, and Payton is best bet for starting lineup.

Scratch that starting lineup prediction. Fizdale making his opinion of our PGs loud and clear.

Trier will start!

Starting lineup will be:
C - Portis
PF - Randle
SF - Morris
SG - Trier
PG - RJ Barrett

You read that right. RJ is our starting PG.

Not sure if Taj Gibson is out tonight.

If he is, we severely lack in big men off the bench. Fizdale?s bench options would be Knox, DSJ, Payton, Ellington, Dotson, Brazdeikis, and Kadeem Allen.

Good news, I can see Taj Gibson warming up in the background of the pregame show. He?ll be needed tonight with MRob out.

Pretty bold move by Fizdale playing a rookie as your starting PG. RJ is not afraid of the moment but his ball handling is not as good as you would want from a starting PG. DSJ grumbling already, said his ego wouldn’t accept a backup role but he’s got no one else to blame, he played like crap in camp and I read the Knicks brass weren’t happy with his play. If the Knicks have some success with this tonight, I’d expect this is going to be the starting lineup and DSJ will soon be asking for his ticket out of town.

Wassup fellas happy new season and the only day we will be undefeated🤣. Maybe the boys will surprise us this year. Surprised like everyone else that DSjr isn?t in the starting lineup and Frank earned no currency after playing well at FIBA. But I?m ok with playing RJ at point let?s see if the kid can play.

Pressure hurts pipes or forges diamonds....

Trier has played the best of the bunch, so he deserves to start. If DSJ or anybody else wants the job, go take it.

Sends clear message to players.... compete at a high level or sit.

RJ going to see a plus defender in Dejonte Murray. I’d expect you’ll see Pops to apply plenty of ball pressure to see if he can rattle RJ.
