2017 Summer League

Kings had the best draft. And they have Buddy from the trade, who also looked good. Mason, Jackson are great picks. Justin looked better than Josh. Fox looked really good. Great court vision and better scorer than I thought. Will be interesting to see if he can create as easily against pros but he sure looked as good or better than those picked before him.

Yeah in the draft thread I had them as clear winners(they actually did what we supposedly were talking about doing). Keep in mind Giles hasn't played yet, not sure if he'll recover from his health scares but if he does it's just more added to their wonderful crop.

Frank Mason had his best game of the Vegas Summer League on Monday vs. the Lakers, scoring 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting.
The 34th pick in the draft outplayed De'Aaron Fox (12 points, one assist) tonight and single-handedly kept the Kings in striking distance. He did all of his damage in 24 minutes and added six assists, five rebounds, two steals and two treys, but the outlook for his rookie season is murky at best with George Hill and Fox projected to be ahead of him on the depth chart.

Maf we didn't like him at #8

If we draft Mitchell at 8.... I'll cringe.... so, with this, I now expect to hear his name tomorrow.

I don't like Mitchell at 8 if he isn't accompanied with another pick say #12(Jackson) from Detroit. I do like him over Frankie if it came to it, maybe even over Monk

#1 DSJ
#2 Mitch
#3 Monk
#4 Frankie

But he messed around today and dropped 37pts and had 8stls and with today's performance he probably moves up to #2 performer for the SL. I think no matter how it ends we're going to regret what we did this draft.

We knew Mitchell had ability, and were cool with him as our PG target in a trade down.... but he's proving why some had him rated higher than Monk and why his coach raved about him.

Still, SL means little to me. It's good he can score.... and he could prove to be a very good player in the league.... but time will tell.

I just have to laugh bc GH left Utah for BOs, and he might regret that soon.

Here's a kid I loved out of OR.... just a clutch and quality bball player.

Leave it to GSW to, in essence, buy him on draft night. Too bad we didn't do the same bc he would be the perfect young replacement at SF.

From Rotoworld:

Jordan Bell stuffed the stat sheet in Tuesday's double-overtime loss to the Wolves, finishing with five points, 11 rebounds, five assists, five steals and six blocks in 32 minutes.

Wow! Even Draymond Green would be proud of this line. Bell was the 38th pick in the draft and was purchased from the Bulls for $3.5 million, but the Warriors have an eye for talent and may have another gem on their hands. If there's one thing the Warriors could use, it's interior defense and Bell proved that he can provide that. He's not a lock to be in the rotation on opening night, but this line should raise some eyebrows in fantasy circles.

Our third Pg? Lol

The Knicks have invited former Florida State guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes to training camp, according to the Florida State Seminoles website.

Rathan-Mayes played six games in the Knicks' summer league program, averaging six points, 3.5 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game.

"I'm super-excited to be going to training camp with the New York Knicks," he said, according to the website. "It's an amazing opportunity to be a part of a special franchise."

Rathan-Mayes had the fourth-most assists in school history and scored 1,236 points in 100 games over three seasons.

Rick Carlisle believes that Dennis Smith Jr. can be a franchise player for the Mavericks.
"I think that he has amazing ability that needs to be brought along the right way," Carlisle said. "That's on all of us... You don't just declare a guy a franchise cornerstone player. You help put him in the position to get there. That's going to be our plan." Smith Jr. has arguably been the most impressive player at Summer League so far, pumping out averages of 19.5 points, 7.5 boards and 5.0 dimes per contest. DSJ has also stated on numerous occasions that he felt slighted when he dropped to No. 9 on draft day, and he's eager to prove to the league what a mistake that was.

Best rookies in Summer League after 3 games according to Kevin Pelton ESPN. His top pick the guy we passed on DSJ.

Best rookies

1.Dennis Smith Jr., Dallas Mavericks

The ninth pick of this year's draft, Smith has been the most impressive rookie so far in Las Vegas. Playing alongside more talent and in a better system than at North Carolina State, Smith has gotten where he's wanted on the court, finished creatively at the rim, drawn fouls and found open teammates.

Despite inconsistent outside shooting (5-of-14, 35.7 percent from 3), Smith has scored 55 points on 46 shooting possessions. He also has been active at the defensive end, a change from his low-energy style in college that left questions in the minds of scouts.
2. John Collins, Atlanta Hawks

After developing as a traditional post player at Wake Forest, Collins has to employ a new style to succeed in the NBA.
He has shown that ability this week, playing well as a center for the Hawks' summer league team. Collins has pulled down double-figure rebounds in all three games while shooting 60 percent from the field, highlighted by 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting against New Orleans.
3. Donovan Mitchell, Utah Jazz
Mitchell's shot hasn't always gone down this summer -- he's shooting just 21-of-59 -- but when it has, he has been incredible. Mitchell dropped 37 points on the Memphis Grizzlies in an overtime loss Tuesday, making 14 free throws and adding eight steals.
Mitchell's defense has been the constant. He has shown All-Defensive potential as an individual and help defender, lifting him into this spot over more efficient scorers.
Honorable mention: Bam Adebayo, Miami Heat; De'Aaron Fox, Sacramento Kings; Kyle Kuzma, Los Angeles Lakers; Frank Mason III, Sacramento Kings; Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics

Mentioned this kid in the THJ thread as a low cost replacement for him. He's going to get every opportunity this season. 2nd best vet next to Ingram's performance.

2. DeAndre' Bembry, Atlanta Hawks

With Tim Hardaway Jr.'s departure, the Hawks have minutes open at shooting guard, and Bembry has made a strong case to claim them with his performance this week. He has scored 55 points in just 76 minutes -- 26.0 per 36 -- on 57.1 percent shooting, while also handing out 4.0 assists per game.

Perhaps most encouraging was Bembry hitting a pair of 3-pointers on Monday after attempting just one in his first two games.

Saw a little of this with Carlisle's coaching staff giving the kid extra attention during a game. I don't ever remember PJ ever saying the same about KP or Horn's staff giving KP extra attention. All you got from PJ was sending a 5'9" coach over to Latvia to teach something to a big man or bitching about him.

Carlisle and Cuban have raved about DSJ more than any team has ever raved about a draft pick ever. It's comical. Somewhere Popovich is laughing his ass off at this team so in love with their 19-year-old rookie. They better hope he's a good self-motivator, because he sure as hell is going to be hard to motivate externally now that he already knows his coach and owner think he's the greatest prospect in the history of sports.

And people wonder how KP went from a fresh faced rookie to having the ego to skip his exit meeting in his 2nd season. Gee, I wonder if it had something to do with starting to believe he was already a star before he'd actually earned it.

Kiya always felt #kporzee should've been brought off the bench at least during his rookie campaign yr.

Yeah, I used to disagree with Kiya's ideas like this, but as we continue to watch this franchise's recurrent meltdowns, you have to realize there's a clear reasoning behind the things he says.

Lonzo Ball (sore right groin) put on a mesmerizing show for the Lakers fans in Vegas on Wednesday, finishing with 36 points, 11 assists, eight rebounds, five steals, two blocks and six turnovers.
He's been stuffing the stat sheet in Vegas and made a procession of big plays to help L.A. erase a big deficit, showing a closer's instinct. He looked confident from all over the court, too, making 12-of-22 FGs, 3-of-10 threes and 9-of-12 FTs. The Summer League caveat applies and we'll get a better feel for his play vs. NBA competition in the preseason, but for now, just sit back and enjoy. From an entertainment standpoint, we hope he's not rested for Thursday's tournament game.

I applaud Rick n Cuban for being their draft picks biggest fan .. Dolan n Mills need to take notes on the development of a star rookie from the Mavs franchise. KP having 3 differ head-coaches in 2 season are a poor way of developing a star player.

I mention it several times before draft night that the 2017 NBA Draft-Class are loaded with up coming star players, DSJ is one out of so many other star athletes entering the NBA in the 2017-18 season. It seem like Boston GM Ainge are the only team GM that knew 5 to 7 players in the 2017 draft class has the athletic potential to be the first pick.
Phil Jackson graded a BIG "F" for failure on the 2017 Draft Night for not doing his best to get two first round picks, having two 2nd round picks to trade plus Melo.
Dont get me wrong .. Frank Nitty and Dotson were great picks we got for our LOSER Knicks season, Phil dont get no points or a pass for selecting Frank n Dotson out of a loaded draft. The same way Phil gets NO points or pass for selecting KP after having a 17 win season.

The Knicks front office swelled-up rookie KP head with various advertisement all over NY BIG-APPLE media of the Knicks future STAR franchise player KP .. and not once did the Knicks organization do anything to enhance their future star KP performance by hiring a personal shooting-coach or a Big-Man coach to teach KP his strong/weak areas on the perimeter or how to maneuver inside the paint area on offense n defense to become the 7.3 intimidator n rebounder.
Plus for two seasons our senile Phil Jackson did not lend a hand to help future star KP develop a inside/outside passing-skills for the offensive triangle, having KP tall 7.3 height we were suppose to take advantage of KP court vision on the court.

Dennis Smith Jr is putting on a first half show against the Kings and he's making it look easy. Not sure if he'll be able to get away with this right out the gate once the regular season starts but this is really ridiculous.

I will say Josh Jackson is quietly having himself a nice SL showing. I'm not sure if understands how good he can be. He's an incredible improvisor already and I stick by he will be the best player from this draft.

We all knew DSJ had the goods and is a legit elite prospect; we all felt the punch in the gut when we passed on him....

But just like an ex-player said in NBA radio today.... SL comprised of D-league players.... most won't even play in NBA.... let's wait to see how these rookie perform in Nov before we start declaring what a prospect is or might be.

I mean, Forbes from SA looks like a HOF talent vs a lot of these scrubs.
