Brooklyn Nets @ New York Knicks - Wednesday 11/9 - 7:00PM

I agree about Melo, ice cold shot. Lance has at least made 6 pts but I said the bench may be one of worst in the NBA. End of Nov, PJ is going to see that and trade for someone. Maybe Randle can help, he started playing in Westchester scoring 22 pts.

I cant wait to get Randle's 2 way talent in our team practice scrimmage games ..
Melo's ISO plays in the last 4 minute wouldve had us leading at the half if he would hit the shot ..
Lance Thomas 6 pt performance dont help Jennings on offense or defense

Rose came out hot in the 3rd, couple of layups, finding Noah down low for an easy bucket and a 20 ft jumper. Knicks only down by one 59-58, lets get some stops.

four consistent offense plays to KP with ball-movement but NO player movement is not a good game-plan to start the 2nd half for our starters Jeff

14-4 run by the Knicks with Melo hitting all 14 pts gives the Knicks a 1 pt lead 72-71 end of the 3rd. Willie H. got in the game late 3rd and blocked Bogie at the rim, maybe we see more of him in uniform instead of wearing a suit.

Knicks pulling away with the Nets in a scoring drought for 8 minutes and KP hitting back to back 3's. 87-78 Knicks. 4:30 left in the game.

Wow, great game thread.

Missed almost the entire game due to being at work. Looks like we came out poorly in the 1st quarter, took a couple quarters to pull even, and then dominated the 4th quarter to get in position for the win. Jennings looks like the catalyst tonight from what little I've seen and heard.

About 4 mins left and the Nets have 82 pts so I going to say they hold the Nets to under 100 pts. Nets shooting 28% in the 2nd half but Willie and KP protecting the rim in the second half, Willy should be getting more playing time based on what he did today with his D and scoring.

Lot of catalysts today. Jennings reminds me of Rafer Alston with that one handed fake pass, I forget what they nicknamed that fake pass by Rafer. Melo took over in the 3rd to get the Knicks the lead and KP took over in the 4th, can't ignore Willy. Horn would be crazy not to find him some minutes.

missed the game but i'll catch one of the repeats. really really glad they won this one. heard jennings had a strong second half along with willy and porKINGis. even heard a rumor that they played defense in the 2nd half. have to see with my own eyes if it actually was defense or if it was more about brooklyn being on the 2nd of a back to back,

Jennings 11 assist off the bench. Sasha n Kuz big 3rd/4th quarter. KP P&R's worked well when bench players provided double screens. Rose getting to the paint easily. Willy tipping in everything that misses the basket, etc. This team will be a force to be reckoned with when Jeff figures it out .. Sasha should be our 6th man off the bench.
Bench was on fire the whole game .. some times it takes bench players to beat bench players

I just watched the game:

(My thoughts)

Knicks struggled in the first (offensively) for a change.... Nets sank 3s and got layup after layup. Lopez was a force early on....

The second unit was largely ineffective in the secind quarter, but Ndour & LT at least played with some energy and made some buckets. Holiday and BJ and KOQ pretty bad.

Lee kept NYK from getting blown out in the first half.... then the starters made a little push.

Melo caught fire midway through the third, swishing 6 consecutive shots.... Then HORN won us the game with his coaching.

In the 4th, we went Euro ball: BJ, Sasha, Kousminkus, Willy H, & KP. BJ and Sasha turned the game with the defensive intensity.... KP knocked down some shots.... BJ with 11 assists... Willy H finishing and Kouz playing with confidence....

The best part was he let this squad pretty much play the entire 4th.... rewarding the bunch. The ball Movement and effort was great.

Now.... let's be honest.... this was a schedule victory. We win bc Nets played the night before and that was exasperated bc Lopez was on a minutes restriction and Lin was inactive. This could've been an ugly loss.

I want to see more of the Euros playing together.... they've earned it. Willy H had 14 points (6-7 from floor) with 6 rebounds.... all in the 1 quarter basically.

I think it was good we were able to rest Rose and noah and melo....
That helps!

Hornacek may have won the game in the locker room at the half with Knicks players reporting he laid into them for their first half performance. The Knicks responded immediately in the 3rd with DRose providing the offensive spark.

Hornacek also didn't make the mistake of going with that all bench unit he used against Utah and staggered at least one starter usually KP, Melo and CLee mixed in with the 2nd unit. Good move by coach.

Willie deserves more minutes esp the way Noah has been playing, he's been overrated imo, I only remember one game he had an impact. Horn is still tinkering with the lineup but I see promise with those starters esp if Noah can come around.

Jennings was bursting with confidence in the 4th. Intimidating and challenging the Nets with that one-handed fake pass, then dishing 11 assists. Also, I wanna see more of Willy, he put a nice show in his limited playing time. With the starting lineup well-rested we should be able to grab a W in Boston. They lost their last three games and will be looking to redempt themselves before the home crowd, so we gotta play hard.
:gony:

good breakdown of how things played out and how we won. but last year, and obviously the year before, we would've lost this game regardless if it was supposed to be a schedule victory.
i like the fact that hornacek is giving minutes to a lot of the guys on the roster. some of the rotations may not have worked out so well, but sometimes you have to play around a little to see what you've really got.
we haven't played 10 games yet and we're getting a pretty good look at what guys can do, especially when we assert ourselves on defense. i really appreciate the fact that sasha is playing a lot better than he was at this point last year. that gives us a lot more depth at the guard position obviously and makes it easier for horn to rest dRose like he did last night. that SHOULD help us out a lot down the stretch. sasha can be very effective, especially on the defensive end when our guys are communicating and playing smart. he'll have bad nights like anybody else, but he and jennings are a very feisty combination and they should be able to annoy a lot of the 2nd unit backcourts. a lot of people like to say that your offense comes from your defense and for the most part, on most days and with most teams i would agree with that. but with this particular club, i get the feeling that the more aggressive they are on offense, the more aggressive they'll be on defense.
it looked like two completely games from half to half. and i'm not convinced that it was solely based on the rotation. they just looked like they were playing a different kind of game. other than rose and a 2nd quarter attack from cLee towards the end of the first half, a lot of the guys were just settling for jump shots. at the same time their defense was looking slow and uninspired. maybe it's a coincidence.
i heard and read yesterday that in practice they were spending more time working on defending different kinds of offenses. i hope they continue to do that. that would mean less work on the triangle overall :)

Noah may. It be providing the defensive and rebounding presence we hoped for, but he's clearly been the "QB" of our offense. His passing has been spectacular. The offense seems to flow when we run it through Noah. And now that we are setting picks, he's really dominating the game in subtle ways.... so I wouldn't dismiss Noah's contributions thus far

35th in PER @14.59 out of 50 centers says my eye test is correct about Noah. Quinn has a higher rating than Noah.

He does have the highest AST ratio among centers by far though.

My eyes tell me our offense seems to run best when Noah is playing point forward, so to speak.

Here's a good article explaining what I see:

(Theknicksblog by Tommy Dee)

Joakim Noah has been the Knicks' most important player, yet they seem to play so often without him, or even through him, for stretches of suboptimal offense.

Sitting at 2-4 after a very disappointing loss at home to the Utah Jazz, the Knicks once again find themselves in the difficult situation of needing a win to pull them closer to the elusive .500 mark.

When they've played well, the Knicks have played really well offensively. The ball seems to flow more and the results are open, in rhythm jump shots and drives leading to lead-stretching runs that put games out of reach. When they struggle, it's mainly been due to a lack of getting defensive stops, compounded by poor 5-on-5, half court offense that is often a result of missed, long-range jump shots early in the shot clock from Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis.

Unlike in Chicago, the Knicks were on the wrong end of one such run Sunday, allowing for the Jazz to go on a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter -- essentially putting the game too far out of reach.

What's missing in their losses, in my mind, is something that has been absent when the team struggles to produce offensively. They miss running their early 5-on-5 offense through the team's best passer, Joakim Noah. When that happens, their defense just isn't good enough (yet?) to overcome their inability to match baskets and those droughts are too much to over come.

Regarding Noah's importance, the numbers seem to agree:

Knicks +8.6 point per 100 possessions with Noah on the court (145 minutes). -21.5 net rating when Noah is on the bench (143 minutes)

Noah is averaging 4.2 assists per game in the Knicks' four losses and 5.5 in their two wins. He's also averaging just 24.7 minutes per game in those losses, compared to 28.5 minutes in their wins. Part of that is due to matchups and perhaps head coach Jeff Hornacek trying to restrict his minutes early in the year to ensure he plays as many games as possible. But Noah's importance to what the team wants to achieve is staggering.

Noah does a masterful job of moving the ball to an open man, but even more to the point, he's a one-man shot creator for a teammate. Per NBA Stats, Noah is 10th in the NBA (3.8) in "screen assists" per game, which is defined as a basket scored directly off one of Noah's screens. It's a set play for shooters that the Bulls ran through him all the time, and certainly falls under the umbrella of Triangle.

While the team figures its identity out defensively, which is another story completely, they have to sustain its scoring. And it would behoove the coaching staff to run the offense through Noah in critical 5-on-5 situations. The results, both in New York and especially as a Bull, are there and his impact is critical to their success.
