Game Preview

In what remains an ongoing search to recapture the magic that yielded a playoff berth last season, the New York Knicks are sharpening their focus on All-Star forward Julius Randle.

Randle, who scored 25 of his 31 points in the second half of the Knicks' 105-96 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday, will lead New York into a road game against the Houston Rockets on Thursday.

The Knicks have dropped seven of eight games to fall into 12th place in the Eastern Conference, and they have yet to uncover any answers to their prolonged struggles.

Getting Randle back on track seems a solid place to start.

"When he's aggressive like that, it makes us better," Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said of Randle and his second-half outburst. "I love to see when he's attacking the rim. It puts a lot of pressure on people and it opens things up for us."

Randle is on the same page as Thibodeau. And with the Knicks set to play six of their next nine games on the road, investing thought into unlocking Randle seems the first step toward righting what has been wrong so far.

For Randle, toeing the line between attacking and facilitating remains a delicate balance.

"When I'm myself, I naturally do those things," he said. "When I'm hesitating and overthinking, when I've got an open shot and I don't shoot it, I'm trying to play the right way and get other people going, it kind of takes me out of rhythm. It takes away from my aggressiveness.

"It's crazy because that's when I start to get the turnovers. But when I'm naturally aggressive and playing with force, everything kind of falls into place and I get into a rhythm."

Randle has seen his scoring, rebounding and assist totals decline from last season, when he was named the NBA's Most Improved Player.

As the centerpiece for what the Knicks strive for offensively, Randle understands the significance of his role. With Kevin Knox, RJ Barrett and Obi Toppin sidelined by health and safety protocols, the Knicks aren't whole. But even when they have been, the results haven't been up to snuff.

"It's a struggle," Randle said. "We're down a couple of guys and not playing great basketball. It's tough, but this is what we all signed up for.

"We're going to get it done. We're going to figure it out, we've just got to take it a game at a time and get our confidence and our juice going."

The Rockets might be lacking confidence now, too. Since winning seven consecutive games, Houston has dropped three of four during a grueling stretch of the schedule.

The Rockets lost both ends of a back-to-back last weekend against the Milwaukee Bucks and the Memphis Grizzlies before beating the Atlanta Hawks on Monday. The matchup with the Knicks will be the Rockets' second back-to-back inside of a week, as Houston took a 124-89 road loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday.

The Rockets were without their top four scorers against the Cavaliers and looked the part, with Christian Wood (knee), Eric Gordon (groin), Jalen Green (hamstring) and Kevin Porter Jr. (thigh) all sidelined. In addition, Houston coach Stephen Silas left the bench in the first quarter following a bout of dehydration, and while he did not return, he appears set to return Thursday.

"He seems to be doing better," Rockets forward Jae'Sean Tate said. "Well just go from there."

Rookie Alperen Sengun came off the bench to lead Houston with a career-high 19 points plus 11 rebounds and five assists at Cleveland. Another rookie reserve, Josh Christopher, scored 17 points.

Wsup Rady .. Thanks for the Game-Thread, the Rockets been showing how deep the depth are on their roster through their injuries & Covid protocol cases. The Rockets starters chemistry at the start of the season were not clicking, after some injuries DNP a couple of their starters the Rockets got on track the last 10 games by going 7-3.
The Knicks should be so lucky! The Knicks are still playing the Blame-Game like my grandchildren when they visit and break something. The Knicks are 2-8 in their last 10 games.
Our head coach Thibs have a cancer Starter lineup that has been playing like BUMS, no chemistry or meshing players in the lineup.
Coach Thibs also have a 2nd unit bench lineup that have winning chemistry from last season, and has been out-scoring opponents bench players & starter lineup.
And coach Thibs breakup the Knicks best winning lineup to help the cancer starter lineup.
Yep, coach Thibs and Randle are on the same-page to bad for the Knicks team the two are not on the same-page with the Knicks roster.
Trade Randle and Fire Thibs .. 2-8 record in 10 games we could get from the G.league head-coach !!!

OK who's the better captain? Randle? Or Gordon?
The Rocks took one 3 .. and has been taking it straight to the hoop on every possession getting Noel two fouls the first 2 min from tip-off.

Hey Kiya, Your points are well taken and correct.
Just a side note before saying anything else.... Did anyone notice how tired Randle looked in the 4th quarter of the GS game? Is this the Thib's look that comes when a player is completely burn out?

Well your trade Randle and Fire Thib's and the good. But what about the F.O.?? What kind of lineup does that leave us. As long as RJ is in this organization there is cancer so when do you cut him out. I'm with you firing Thib's but I would like to see if Randle game changed to something good. Now if you think Randle is too far gone to change then I'm with you on the trade. I guess I'm still hoping for a N.O. moment with Randle where he can fit in an offensive scheme that good for him.

With his hair and sleepy eyes he looked like he had a long day at work on a New York building rather than playing in one.

How did Quickley get that open to close out their last shot of the quarter? Maybe it was one of the Rockets young players who made a mistake.

Wow! The Rocks are no joke, scoring the majority of their 30 pts in the first quarter by taking the ball inside. The Knicks are relying on 3-balls (7-11)
Duece-Deuce and MitchRob make a great defensive pair

Im really liking McBride alot. I love the energy he plays with. I wish Obi was out there, Ive missed watching him (pause)

And thats now 4 steals for duece deuce

Edit

And i dont care that he just got out on a poster by Theiss. I hope he doesnt either, i love the effort

Is it me, or the trio lineup of Noel Randle Fournier don't want to be on the court together
I cant figure out why they kept trying to force the ball into Nerlins butterfingers Noel. I havent played 2k with current teams in a few years but if i was to use the current Knicks i would probably avoid passing the ball to Nerlins 98% of the time

Deuce-Deuce is trying to make it official he could mesh well with Randle in the starter lineup lol
Go Rookie !!!

9 assists and 0 turnovers with 4 steals?

Make McBride the starting PG!

There was a Fournier sighting. Excellent. Pump up your trade value.

In the last week:
RJ with 7 3's in a game
Grimes with 7 3's in a game
Quickley with 7 3's in a game
Knox with 5 3's in a game
Deuce with 9 assists, 4 steals, 0 turnovers

Only 1 of those players starts. Not a good look for Thibs.

That's the reason why Noel was shipped out of Philly .. rookie Ben Simmons was so creative at getting the ball down-low in the paint, and Noel wasn't able to give Ben a dime.

The Knicks biggest problem last season (and this season) are getting the ball down low to the center MitchRob, especially early in the first quarter, to help the young MitchRob learn ways to go to the FT line. MitchRob injury last season had Noel at center throughout mid-season, Noel's top consistent defense, and put back performance were all we needed to win the majority of games.
Now it's time for more Knicks players (other then Quickley) to start passing downlow to MitchRob.
Tonight, the Rocks were finding millions of ways to get their center Theis the ball down-low to score 22 pts

Advertisement (Top Jersey sales) .. RJ & Randle been calling the shots for Thibs offense.
Now! Tonight's game watching Deuce & Randle mesh well together against the Houston Rockets, we may start seeing a lot more of Deuces.
To be truthful ....
I would like D.Rose leadership out of Randle's starter lineup, and the trio of D.Rose, Quickley, and Obi Toppin come off the bench together in a lineup all season.

The Knicks bench scored 63 pts, 19 rbs, and 14 Dimes in Thibs 9 man rotation for the win.
Quickley & Deuce-Deuce took control of the game in the 4th quarter outscoring the Rockets 32-21 for a Knicks desperately needed WIN !!!

So if Kemba would have worked out, then Thibs would've been hiding the rookies Grimes and Deuce-Deuce dynamic performance on the bench the same as he did rookie Obi Toppin.
There were no reason at all for Randle to receive 40 to 44 minute of playing time game after game last season.
We need to start looking for a new real NBA head-coach like a take charge Pat Riley !!!
