Game thread: New York Knicks @ Los Angeles Clippers 3:30 1/5/2020 [Game #36]

What I liked about the game today was that we came out of the gates and punched a much better team in the mouth on their court. We also didn?t stop fighting in the 2nd half when they kept trying to roll over us.

Long story short, Clippers are a much better team than us. That?s why they won.

MEM blew them out last night (maybe that hurt us bc it woke them up some)... but, they didn?t play KL and PG fouled out with 8 to go in 4th.

We beat ourselves (4 technicals, we missed 13 FTs, and we allowed their 2 bench scoring plugs... all they really have... to carry the load).

So, we gave them how many free points on technicals? 4? We missed 13 freebies. That?s a 17 point swing right there.

Losers lament is to scour defeat looking for moral victories.

LAC didn?t want to play. They begged us to win. They couldn?t care competing against a bad opponent like us....

We bricked game again by clanking 13 free throws.

If this team wants to show me anything... they must avoid another 50 loss season. If Miller wants to keep his job, the mandate is simple... get to 33 wins.

No shame in MH and LW eating Frank and MRob?s lunch. A learning experience. Those 2 are best bench G/big combo in the biz.

They're not as good as most thought. Doc said they're still learning to play together but if I'm the Clips I get MM because I don't think they have enough to take on the Lakers or the Bucks come the playoffs.

I don?t know what?s going to happen with Morris at this point. He would be a great fit for a half dozen teams with deep playoff aspirations.

Moving him for a late 1st round pick or two 2nd round picks would be easy I think. Our front office will find a way to mess this up though. On top of that, Morris has made it so clear he wants to stay close to Philly, the west coast teams may not want to deal with him being a headache.

I can't wait until we get a real PG, that's when I'll take this team seriously. STANK is awful, there's nothing about his game that suggest he'll play any significant role on a good team. His defense has regressed every yr and his offense is flat and pourus

The Clippers beat us and they didn't have any real interest in doing so to start the game. Trez called his team out the night before, Doc Rivers makes excuses almost after every loss, they were very beatable today. I like some things we're doing still but we need to clean this roster up and get a real PG

Some of our players need to start making leaps, look across the league it's been happening on almost every single team but ours

They aren't. When they're on they are unbeatable but they play like a team waiting to be crowned instead of working hard as hell to earn it. Morris would be a good fit but to be honest they need size more than perimeter help

Did I not say if Bullock gets on the floor we'd have to sit guys? So DNPs will rack up for Trier, Dotson, Ellington. Again this roster is a mess and requires major tweaking

Clippers have PG and KL and that is almost enough come post season. More importantly, when those 2 rest they have Lou and Harrell to score.

Pat Bev gives them a defender.... They?ll look to add a MM or Love, but they have best player on the planet.

C-Gaines takes a shot at Fiz:

LOL - Agent videos - Mitch puts a lot of pressure on defense with threat of lob finishes but if he can develop a consistent mid-range jumper first would be beneficial for his game. It's obvious he wasn't well schooled in the fundamentals of the game. Lots to learn.

I think @nyknicks fans learned today the difference in being a good help defender/Rim Protector vs. Individual defender. Young buck still learning, evolving & growing.

If Frank can’t shut down Lou Williams... is he a defensive stopper?

Not like Frank is winning games with his scoring or play-making ability. Come on... Frank played poorly. It’s OK. It happens.

But this is the middle of year 3... we need to start seeing something, no?

MRob couldn’t contain Harrell either.

If Randle scored 30, if we hit or FTs,
Or if Frank and MRob defended... we win this game.

Loss
Not
All
On
Frank...

But it hangs on him nonetheless

The Harrell & Lou picknroll are dynamic by putting slow Randle to defend Lou to get a easy two or 3.
Plus the veteran Lou & Beverly tandem in the Clippers back-court tore us apart in the 2nd quarter .. 47-24
The Clippers didnt have to play defense! All the Clippers had to do was outscore the Knicks by shooting a higher FG and FT percentage in the 2nd half of the game.

Who let Paul George score 30 points in just 18 minute of playing-time ???
I like Morris offense but Morris defense STINKS !!!

I still say PG3 is just a great scoring player in the regular season, and a no-defense inconsistent player in the post-season games.
The Clippers having a 30 minute Paul George in their rotation doesn't have a chance in a post-season series vs Rockets or Lakers !!!

I'd trade Harkless for MM in a heartbeat if I were the Clips. He was invisible today, MM a star for the Knicks and while not the shot blocker Harkless is he'll add toughness and grit to that Clips team. Pretty sure the Clips are where he's headed, they're all in for that ring this season.

PG is gonna get his... if Frank can?t stop you or MRob... then we ain?t stopping you. Those are our 2 best defenders. PG scored 30 but at least RJ/MM matched that offense.

I?m not doubting their interest nor possibility...Clippers are always interested in players but rarely make trades in season. Remember their long standing interest in Chandler?

I?ve watched quite a few of their games they?ll need someone to match up against the size of AD/McGee/D-12/Greek Freak/Lopez Twins/Bam/Leonard/Theis/Kanter/Jokic/Milsap/Plumlee...etc etc

Doc likes to go small but it hasn?t prove to be a real strength for them. They need a mobile big like maybe Favors or Holmes but we?ll see. Morris wants to stay here for the long haul

Went back at looked at the game again. Can somebody tell me when was Frank on Lou? Clippers last offensive play in the game with us down by 3 who was on Lou? It was Randle because of the switch up top. I saw Frank defending PG, Harrell and LW.
If you go back and look at the game there is one thing that remind consistent. When our defense breaks down generally it because of the same blown assignment. When there man get by them it cause domino effect on all the other players. Trying to showcase your talent for you godfather. Maybe he will tell him to stay with his man and stop stay under the basket trying to rebound.

Bench points: Clippers 85, Knicks 36.

It?s probably an indictment on Miller, to some degree then. He sits idle while Booker then Lou destroy us...

Hello. Wake up.

Send your best weapon to guard them and task Frank with the lock down. At least try to curb their scoring prowess some.

? Lou checked back in, an excellent and exciting opportunity to see the Knicks try Frank Ntilikina on him. Naturally, Frank went to the bench and Kadeem Allen got the nod, ?cuz with Elfrid Payton out for personal reasons and Damyean Dotson out for inexplicable reasons, why give your young defensive specialist a shot when there?s an afterthought available who?s played fewer NBA games in his lifetime than Williams has for five different teams??

This is what ticks me off about coaching. The 1 issue I have... don?t force guys to fit your scheme, mesh with your preconceived roles! Devise something that plays to your roster?s strengths.

Whatever Frank is... he is definitely our best man defender on the perimeter. Any time it?s the third quarter and we are contending with a red hot scorer.... if it?s on the perimeter... get Frank on him and keep him there.

?Have we ever won a game where the opponent made 57 percent?? Rivers asked.

The Clippers actually made a little bit of history Sunday. George, Williams and Montrezl Harrell each reached 30 points, combining for 98, the latter two off the bench. The Clips had never had three guys hit 30 in the same game.

?History is good, someone?s got to make it,? Rivers said. ?But I wouldn?t mind seeing us play better defense.?

Well, look: Mike Miller certainly can?t be happy with the 135 points ? it is plainly stated in the Coach?s Creed that defense is end-all and be-all. But he was as honest as he could be about all of this. With a dose of truth serum, what he might have said was this: ?A three-point loss, on the road, to that team, for this team? Sign me up!?

What he did say was this: ?The biggest thing that comes to mind that I love is the effort, the fight, the scrap. That?s a high-level team and that?s one of the wilder games I?ve been a part of. The effort and the grit we showed in staying in that game and putting ourselves in position to win ? I?m proud of this group.?

It?s the pros. There?s still no medals for trying. But if you?re going to play a game, why can?t it be an entertaining one. If you?re going to lose, why not go down firing? If you?re going to have a lunchtime run at the Y, why not let 19,068 witnesses in on the fun?

What Miller said is true I was expecting a beat down by the Clips. The game was winnable a play or 2 on either side of the ball or better FT shooting and we could have stolen this one. No disrespect to RJ but if we had drafted Ja he would have been the better player for us now that DSJ looks like a certified bust.
