Game thread: New York Knicks @ San Antonio Spurs 8:30 10/23/2019 [Game #1]

Entertaining first game of the season. Lots of guys contributing, Knox with some clutch 3s, RJ looks like a star his first game. Randle looking like he's worth the dough.

Payton missed a wide open layup, leads to a transition 3 from Spurs. 14-0 run. Ball game. Oh, and Randle is hurt.

Knicks have depth but nobody who can score in 4th. Might be competitive and improved but with no PG, little outside shooting, and no go to guy, and a bad HC.... gonna be another 20-win season.

What took Fiz so long to get Morris in the game? 97-91 nay to 105-97 SA. Where was Morris? He was out top offensive weapon tonight and was on bench as game slipped away.

Yeah that?s what you get when you have rookies mixed with 2nd/3rd tier vets= a lot of losses. We are still at the at least we showed effort and didn?t lose by 20+ stage. Amazing to score 30 plus points off over 20 to?s only to lose by 10 um um um gonna be another long season fellas😕
 
I know it?s too early to throw bust around,
and since we got nothing we are going to give them tons of time to show us who they are...

But, DSJ, Knits, Knox won?t be on this team when we get good. Just biding time. Hard to fathom we squandered KP, Knits, Knox.... 3 consecutive lottery picks.
 
Good news is Morris will have trade value. RJ legit. Randle OK. Other than this.... we got little of redeeming value. Maybe MRob?

Brace yourself for another loooooong season.
 
RJ has 21 (9-13 shooting). Randle and Morris 26 and 25.... Portis missed a ton of open shots....

SA a machine and we had a brand new team. I get it.... but I can?t see us going anywhere if DSJ and Knox and Trier aren?t gonna score consistently.
 
I don't know, I see some hope after this game and I was predicting 2-8 record to start the season. Let's see where we stand after 10 games after the guys get some burn playing together. I would be on the lookout for a PG if we are 2-8 though, DSJ or Ntilikina don't look good enough.
 
I felt like at no point was the game in doubt. Spurs had control from the get go.... we competed and tried but they toyed with us. They were bored and apathetic and whenever they saw us get close they pulled away.

Don?t buy into narrative we were in this game, had a shot.... we had no chance, at all. This wasn?t about closing the game out.... this was a far superior team trying just enough to ensure they won the game.

Now, fast forward to Jan... when team is 9-27.... then we see the competitive spirit die out....

I see 26 wins tops.

When your front office stinks and has for a long time that?s what happens. You actually hit on KP, but he couldn?t wait to get away. And out of a major market no less. That?s how you know your front office is awful. Then they get stuck putting a wig on a pig this Summer after being spurned by any free agent worth a crap. So you get stuck with Portis, Payton,Morris,Taj,Randle.....all looking clueless in the 4th and poor KK and Knits um um um. RJ looks like player. Gotta build around him and MRob try not to blow anymore lottery picks. The draft is a crapshoot....Knicks Tank rolls on like a broken record. Just let me know when I?m allowed to root for this team to win again🤢
 
We root for wins, baby. This ain?t last season. Especially now with lottery changes.

RJ, MRob, Randle. This is the foundation. Everything else is just space.... let?s hope we find takers and we start accumulating assets. This team is unwatchable tho, again, other than rooting for the growth of those 3 players.

I?m not going through this again tho. I?ll watch DAL, LAC, POR and just kind of check in on my Knicks this season.
Fizdale, Perry and Mills have to go tho.
 
Had to work couldn't watch but from what I could tell boxscore watching...Fizdale tried to "coach by feel" and got bit in the arse in the end? This very rarely if ever works. Maybe Payton officially won the starting position, Cool...now "coach this team Fiz!"

Starting Trier was really comical to begin with unless it was with the clear intention for Trier to change his game considerably. Ummmmm sometimes players are who they are, dude is a 1-Trick Pony probably not even suited to be a hired gun.

Our son RJ played well huhn? We ran offense through Randle?

Randle had a very quiet 25.... but he was very active and created a lot of turmoil with his energy. He was scoring within the transition flow, not really in ISO post up situations.

I saw a complete lack of fundamentals, in terms of passing and defensive positioning from the non-D guys. DSJ and Knox don?t even really know how to move their feet to stay in front. The passing was atrocious... several times we simply handed SA the ball.

Ellington stole minutes away from Dotson and was the impetus for SA going on their 14-0 run.

Knox did his usual knock down 3 shots in 4 possessions then disappear.

DSJ and Frank Both in the running for arguably worst 3 minute spurt in NBA history. And this was odd bc both started off great in their first touch.

RJ is already using his teen body to his advantage. He?s gonna be a bull in 5 years. 9-13 shooting!

Our best offense was our defense... this is what will be our staple if we want to win 30+ games.

This is the group that will Effort and defend and have this team competitive. They were impressive tonight, willing team to stay in the game.

The O only guys will hopefully help with their scoring on most nights, the depth advantage just wasn?t there in SA against that machine.

But if DSJ can?t be an offensive force, this lineup doesn?t have enough to close out games.
 
Fizdale need a legit NBA head coach (Tom Thibodeau0 on his staff .. we had a roster full of young-core players last season and this season, and Fizdale did nothing throughout the entire offseason to prepare the young-core guards (DSJ, Dotson, Trier, Akeem, and Fiba Frank) how to perform on the same-page as a tandem in a lineup SMH .... And the fist game of the season .. Trier in the starter lineup WTF! Rookie RJ starting at PG WTF!
The Spurs 22-15 1st quarter lead said a lot bout Fizdale's decision-making on a starting lineup SMH
And Fizdale's first player off the bench (DSJ) in the rotation, Fiz gave 10 straight minute of playing time to only help the Spurs gain a 16 point lead within those 10 minutes. Payton to the rescue.
In tonight game Fizdale type of foolish coaching, lineups, and substitution in the rotation made several Knick players (Trier, DSJ, and Frank) look like BUST players on the court tonight.
Wow! 10 more games like this and Fizdale should be FIRED! The assistant head coach cant do any worse then Fiz coaching the rest of the season !!!

Thanks for the breakdown Maf, I know other teams have many bright spots on them. Hopefully some of our young guys figure it out. This is very embarrassing 3yr players or better struggling worse than rookies

Sure wish we had a chance at Doncic, even #kporzee looks incredibly 2nd fiddle to him
