Game Thread: New York Knicks vs Orlando Magic 7:30pm 12/21/2015

This is what drives you crazy about the refs... They call an iffy offensive foul on NY (moving screen)... Then call a defensive foul on NY (when an ORL moving screen initiates contact with an extended shoulder)... Either both are off or def fouls or neither are fouls.

Grant n Lance defensive hustle took the Magic lead down to 2
I really didnt want to see anymore no defense Afflalo tonight

Ref ignores a blatant elbow ;push off) by Fournier against Grant... If it were Melo... Red def calls an off foul... He Misses shot but ROLO and Williams watch Smith grab the off board.

NYK
Just can't get over the hump.

Who will make the plays down the stretch? We are at home and have Melo. Shame on us if we lose this one.

Melo (who is having another solid game) makes a beautiful pass... But Thomas fumbles it out of bounds. Tough. Lance has 21 points (8-8 from the field)... But people don't remember when Melo does actually pass the ball...

NYK can't stop ORL tho... Just a shame they "know how to win" and have "closers"... And do it on our court... As we crumble.

Fournier abusing Grant... Again, NYK just can't stop ORL from scoring. Magic with a wire-to-wire victory means NYK is in trouble next 9 games... Scratch 4-6... 2-8 would be a blessing right now.

Why is Grant closing this game? He single-handedly blew the game.

This one is on Fisher. Why he decided to have Grant close this game? It was a 1 point game with 4 left... Now ORL has tied its largest lead... Up 9.

Fournier himself had twice as many points as the NYK starting back court... Another example of how our pathetic guards cost us a game.

Knicks just can't survive when Affalo plays like elephant dung.

Still so perplexed as to why Fisher decided to experiment tonight... And let Grant close the game? Dude hasn't even been in the rotation lately... NYK desperately needed this game... Had a beatable opponent.... Then Grant choked the game away.

Well, there's one team we won't have advantage against in the tiebreaker scenario. NYK lucky to finish a top 10 team in the EC... Forget the playoffs... This was our last chance to get back above .500... We will be 5-6 under .500 by New Year's Day.

ORL is so much younger and faster than us... Just a bad matchup... Especially when it's our 4th game in 5 nights. Odd game... We never had lead, only were tied at 0-0... Yet ORL never led by more than 9...

Melo and Thomas were fantastic. Galloway and Lopez battled and produced. This loss is on our coach, and AA-JC-JG...

Porzingis offensive woes continue too. 3-12 shooting (and 1-6 from 3)... Another sign of a bad coach... 7"3 gets no plays run for him and coach says nothing as he hoists half his shots 30 feet away from the basket. But he did have 8 boards and 4 blocks... So he gave you something (unlike Calderon and Affalo).

Without O'Quinn .. We didnt have a chance against the Magics big-tall rotation of players ..
the Orlando Magics PG is 6.4, SG 6.7, SF 6,9, PF 6.11, C 7.0

Our tandem of Calderon n Afflalo were no contest .. worthless throughout the game on both sides of the court vs Magic guards.
KP raw talent was lost n confuse to the Magics steady movement on offense, plus KP played out on the perimeter on offense.
Melo showed no help in stopping the Magic from scoring 52 pts inside the paint.
Serafin made the 2nd unit look awful

I understand your frustration and yes orlando is just better, which does make them a bad matchup for the knicks. And they beat the knicks without having Elfrid Payton for most of the game. The one thing for porzingis is that he is going to have to develop some sort of Hook shot, and he should, Walt mentioned this, he got a rebound 3 feet from the basket, but since he couldn't position himself to turn and shoot over the defender he ended up kicking the ball out. Even offensively challenged robin lopez had a hook shot he takes close to the basket, and it often goes in, even though the ball is rolling down his wrist as he shoots 90% of the time..

what I find with a lot of these Euro big men, and I am talking about the ones 7'0 and better is that the jumpshot is their offense and most are just not quick and agile enough to get by the defender on the dribble. Porzingis is another one, He is too slow putting the ball on the floor, takes too long to get all those long limbs started up.. instead of hoisting threes as you mentioned, he should be working on a jump hook.. The three point shot should be his last resort, it should just be a shot he can hit when needed..

another thing, burying jerian Grant on the bench is just silly...

KP's shot (which looked so solid early in the season) appears to have deserted him. Is he tired or just not as good an outside shooter as we originally envisioned?

he has a solid jumper from around 10-15 feet, he should be taking that shot the most every single game.. but he does need to develop a shot he can make in the paint.. Take a look at another 20 year old 7 footer in denver.. Nikola Jokic, he is not as athletic as porzingis, but the kid has a super soft touch and already has some nice post moves for his age.. he can give you a series of fakes, up and unders, spins and finishes with a soft touch, already has a nice jump hook he can finish consistently with either hand.. he also can hit the open three when needed..porzingis should take a look at that.. this will add so much more value to his game..

The shooting 35 foot threes is just not what he should be doing.. even if it means not playing him with chucker melo, I would make sure he plays a bit closer to the basket...

when has that ever benefited the knicks? seriously....

They have the better players 1-12 that factors in more...

Porz definitely needs to develop a post game... The turn around - step back jumper and the sky hook... This would be unguardable. I suspect these moves will come in the following years. But he absolutely should focus on the hook shot this offseason.

I dont mind playing Grant... I think the "benching" was a teaching tactic... His defense and unforced errors grew too much to for DF. I just thought he was kept in the game too long... Seems strange to go from odd man out to running the offense down the stretch of a close game... And the decision backfired.

Cant argue with the fact that having Melo on the floor at the end of games is now an insigificant fact. Used to mean something... Not the prior two seasons, and certainly not this year. What I meant, in theory and on paper... If you have a 100 million dollar man... Are home... Vs a team without an established star... You should close those games. But such is life as a NYK fan... Enduring years of Crawford, Nate, Melo blow chunks down the stretch. To be fair to Melo tho... Is all-around game has bordered on almost-pectacular since that no-show in Utah.

I hope NYK trades for a PG pronto... A major need.

Porzingis got his 3 pt shooting up to 35% during his hot streak but he's regressing again and is shooting barely above 30% again. I think they should move him to the 5 permanenantly. I think it may do 2 things force him to play closer to the basket and shoot less 3s, ie KAT I think playing the 5 has attempted 1/3 of the 3s that kp6 has even though he's hitting them at a 40% clip and kp6 is a better defender than Rolo imo though I still hear Rolo is our best interior defender despite that awful game against Vucevic.

Orlando is better, we're not that good. Guys have been playing well above and beyond their EARTH. Our record against winning teams this yr is an abomination. Our schedule has been relatively SOFT. Next month reality will set in quickly as we close out this month.

So true .. after last night game we needed KP inside n around the paint vs all the Magic big men.
We needed KP to take at least 5 to 7 shots inside the paint to score n go to the line 2 or 3 times.
We needed KP defending the paint area to alter shots not playing man to man with Channing Frye on the perimeter.
KP shooting percentage is LOW from his poor decision-making .. Fisher gave KP the green light to shoot, but never gave KP certain areas that's best to shoot from to improve his poor shooting % (poor rookie coaching) watching KP shoot all around the perimeter at 30% the past month are not improving his growth.

Should KP come off the bench in this order:
6th man Lance,
7th man KP
8th man Gallo
9th man D.Will
10th man Grant
11th man Serafin
