Game Preview

Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard has gone for at least 30 points in seven of his last eight games with an average of 33.3 in that span.

He's never had a 30-point game against the New York Knicks and had never lost to them until earlier this season.

The Knicks have allowed only four guards to score at least that many in a game, although they could be hard-pressed to slow down Lillard and end the Trail Blazers' season-high five-game road win streak Tuesday night.

Lillard is the league's fifth-best scorer with 25.4 points per game. Portland (32-28) is 7-1 in his red-hot stretch in which the guard is shooting 41.6 percent on 3-pointers.

He could be at least halfway to the 30-point plateau if he turns in a first quarter like he has in the last two games. Lillard scored 15 in that period and finished with 31 in Saturday's 103-95 win at Chicago before he scored 20 of his 33 points through 12 minutes the next night in a 111-102 victory over Indiana.

"I've been just trying to come out and be in attack mode and set the tone from the start of games," he said.

The Trail Blazers have won 17 of their last 21 overall with consecutive victories to start this six-game trip. They have taken eight of 10 on the road after starting 5-14 there.

"It's a challenge for a good team to go on the road and get a win, let alone a young team like us," Lillard said. "But I think we've been able to do it because we haven't looked at out opponent."

The only guards to score at least 30 against New York (25-36) are Boston's Isaiah Thomas, Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook, Golden State's Klay Thompson and Charlotte's Kemba Walker. Westbrook has done it twice.

Lillard is averaging 20.3 points in seven games against the Knicks, with his highest effort of 29 coming in a 112-110 defeat Dec. 12. The Blazers blew a 10-point fourth-quarter lead, as Carmelo Anthony led New York with 37 points.

The Knicks actually had a better record than the Blazers after that victory and these teams are headed in opposite directions now. Portland is tied with Dallas for the Western Conference's sixth-best record while New York looks certain to miss the playoffs for a third straight season.

Starting Knicks center Robin Lopez, who played his previous two seasons with Portland, believes his club can learn from the Blazers.

"I think they've got a group of guys, they're playing together, they've got each other's backs," Lopez said. "It's something we can do, we should do more consistently, I think."

New York has lost 14 of 17 after falling 98-81 at home to Miami on Sunday. Only nine players took part since starting guard Arron Afflalo was out with swelling on his knee with his status in doubt Tuesday.

Interim coach Kurt Rambis let the players do individual work at Monday's practice since Anthony and rookie Kristaps Porzingis are also banged up. Porzingis will try to make amends for his first performance against Portland - the only game in which he failed to score by missing all six shots.

Thanks for the game thread Rady.

Getting to the time where the Knicks will be playing for next season and not the post-season.

Ty Lawson was waived today by the Rockets, maybe he could be our Damian Lillard next season. Bring him in to see if he's a fit if no one picks him up, Knicks have nothing to lose. His contract is not even guaranteed for next season.

I've almost given up on waiting for PJ to roll the dice on anyone. Maybe it is his obsession with who he considers 'character' guys. I'm not sure. Hard to believe we've spent 2 months ignoring Tony Wroten and now have gone back to re-evaluating him allegedly. Like you said, literally no harm financially in bringing Lawson around, but we seem unlikely to try it.

As far as tonight, I may have to watch the replay, but when I do, I hope to see a better showing than the Miami game. Not going to hold my breath though.

Vonleh with 2 vicious put back dunks and Rolo of to his usual nice start making 2-3 shots. Knicks up 15-10 5 mins left in the 1st.

Lillard with back to back 3s after scoring on a step back 2, scores 8 pts in less than a minute.

JC fouls him on his next 3 and he gets 3 FTS giving Portland a 53-45 lead.

First half was the Lillard show. 3rd qtr it was the other guy in their backcourt, McCallum, who did the Knicks in hitting 6-8 shots and 20 for the game. Looking like what was a close game is now a blowout with Portland up 90-72, 9 mins left in the 4th, Knicks have not scored in the 4th qtr yet.

Calderon misses 2 straight 3s and the crowd has been calling for the Jimmer why not put him in and give the fans something in the game.

Calderon and Galloway are 2-15 (5 points) & 2 assists. Don't even have to tell you what Lillard and McCulllom are doing...

Grant and Jimmer can't play but those 2 bums can stand around the court all night and contribute nothing on offense or defense? Geez.

Well on cue Lillard gets the ball with Jimmer guarding him and he knocks down a 3 after losing Jimmer off a screen.

They threw up a graphic during the game and Portland lost 4 starters, Lopez, Batum, Matthews and LMA and yet this year the Trailblazers field a team that shoots better, are way more athletic and quicker and are playoff bound. PJ with 30M and a 4th pick in this years draft fields this miserable team losing 18 of their last 22 games.

What pisses me off is they looked like they quit in the 4th qtr. scoring 11 pts and waving at guys on defense.

Did not watch this abomination tonight, yeaaaaaaahhhhhh for me, Meanwhile...

Maybe this was the "Kiss Of Death" move by Melo

(NY Post)

It was rock bottom for the Knicks on a night Anthony showed he had lost his hops, even if it was a practice dunk, then lost his cool on the bench. It was a night of shame for Knicks fans ? three of whom wore bags over their heads.

Another fan got into it with Anthony and wound up being escorted from his seat by security.

?He kept calling my name, calling my name, said you guys suck, you guys suck,?? Anthony said. ?At that point, I was trying to gather myself. I turned around and all I did was pointed to Dolan. I told him, ?look, the owner?s right there, ask for your money back.? At that point, he told me he wasn?t coming to another game. You just don?t want to hear that. I pointed to the owner and told him, ?look, you deal with that with him and see if you can get your money back.? ??

In a further indictment, Anthony said things feel worse than last season?s 17-65 debacle.

?It?s tougher now,? he said. ?At least last year we were starting from the bottom. This year we got off to a good start. If I had the answers it would be a lot different.??

(NY Daily News)

Phil Jackson?s second full season as Knicks president has officially gone from bad to worse to ugly. And it all unfolded right in front of Dolan, the MSG Chairman, who immediately after Portland?s 104-85 victory headed directly for Jackson?s suite.

Fredette finished with four points while Jose Calderon, Langston Galloway, Jerian Grant and Sash Vujacic combined to score five points in 58 minutes. Yes, the Knicks have a guard problem. It?s a Code Red guard problem.

So sad how this team is at this point :(.

i 'think' we better get used to it... the team we are seeing now, is (more or less) the team we wil see next year... with no draft pick, no real chance of getting a FA, with Me-Lo losing value with every game played, he is going to be untradeable, we are in deep
doo-doo...

Man I don't know. I thought January's success and progress was gonna last longer than this. Not surprised by downtimes, but I didn't think we'd be back to this. This is even worse than last season because this team has better players and had better team chemistry for a good stretch after that Bulls game on New Year's.

We need a starting PG, but even the free agent to be PGs are concerning. Rubio or Conley is at the top of my list, but Conley has had recent injuries that I'm not sure if he should be offered the money he'd probably get if he stays healthy for the rest of the season, I'm not sure on Rubio's past injuries either. I'd like Rubio the most because I'm a fan of him the most and he's a great passer and brings defense. I was never big on Rondo, but he's a big upgrade with what we have now. He looks like he's past that ACL injury, even dunking now. Despite his stats though, is he that good? Not blaming it on him, but the Kings have less wins than the Knicks.

Giving one of those players a risky contract could be still less riskier than going into next season without upgrading at the position. One thing that could turn out great for us is if we can get Lawson, unless he turns things around greatly which would mean we'd have to see if he should be given a relatively big contract. Has Lawson been healthy for most of his career/recently? It could be better to get Lawson and another player or two than giving somebody such as Conley or Rondo a big contract. Lawson's talent is there, it's just the off-the-court issues he had recently which is something the Knicks would have to consider.

running... yep we def need a point guard... it would allow Me-Lo to get to his spot and get a pass, instead of dribbling to his spot, and being double/tripled teamed on his way there.. would open the court for KP tooo...

but I'm not keen on the present crop of soon tobe FA's, tho if we brought CYLDE out of retirement he'd be an upgrade over our present pg's...they sure do suck...
