Will our defense be enough to quell our lack of a perimeter shooting roster?

This new look Knick team's quintessence is built around defense. I am thrilled to be focusing on stopping teams, and bringing back that aura of a tough, gritty NY squad. I like the Brewer signing, adding Camby was pivotal, Kidd plays excellent team defense, Shump (once he's returned) will once again be the Robin to Chandler's Batman. Happy days are here again, and defense is the catalyst. Prayers answered in my case.

Can't help but feel, however, that we're lacking in reliable, consistent perimeter shooters.

● The epitome of streaky, JR Smith.

● Brewer is well renowned for his lack of a perimeter shot.

● The unpredictable Felton, who shot a mere 30.5% last year in Portland.

● Kidd, who is basically a catch and shoot only 3 point threat. 35% last season.

● Novak, who is a top 3 perimeter marksman, but to say he's one dimensional is not unfair.

● Melo, who is prone to a bipolar night, or even week, from the perimeter. Similar to Smith, but certainly more reliable and will probably lead the team in attempts after Novakaine. Better him than Smith, unless he refines his shot this offseason.

● Prigioni seems to be the only real 3 point threat to have a semblance of consistency, blended with a hit off the dribble shot, as well as with a triple threat game. But how much burn is the savvy old badger going to get? And how will he adjust to a deeper shot in the NBA?

I think there's definitely some cause for concern, and if any one dares try to say that Amar'e is a stretch 4, I'll Paypal someone to have that poster drawn and quartered. :lol:

So the question is, gents: what toll will a lack of shooting take on this team's W/L record?
 
I don't really agree. I mean, we aren't the best 3 point shooting team in the league. But we have enough perimeter scorers to last us. Smith, Kidd, Felton, Melo, Novak all can shoot the 3 pretty consistently. I know Smith is streaky, but I would still have faith in the open 3. Plus we have one more roster spot. I'm hoping for another great shooter. Maybe a Michael Redd, unless they go K-Mart. I'll be okay with that too
 
Having defensive players on the roster is a great thing....getting 10
players to commit to team-defense for 82 games are what we will
be working with.

How great is coach Woody task at getting 48 minutes of team-defense

I'm going to disagree also, i would rather have no 3 point shooting and great defense any day.3 point shooting comes and goes, even for the best shooting teams, but the best defensive teams do it every night.Aren't you tired of getting shredded, because we have a team full of turnstiles, i know i am.This is exactly the kind of team, i grew up watching in the 90's, limited shooting with great defenders, i'm loving it, all we need now is K-Mart and were set.:peace:
 
I couldnt agree more. We gotta keep defenses honest. I know we have guys who can hit 3s but I want another Novak type player. One demensional sniper from 3 who will always find that line. We already have enough bigs and also know how good Melo could be at the 4.

We already have every position covered defensively. Just 1 more shooter is all I ask for.
 
I was a little concerned about this too (I really wanted Jon Diebler back in the Felton deal, BAD) but when you reassess things -- remember how, under D'Antoni, a lot of games we were just bombin' away from deep most nights and not shooting a great % at all most times doing so? Remember how many games under Mike we'd take over 30 3s in a game? Remember how when it didn't work we'd all be screaming about how it was such lazy, low % basketball? Well that's gonna change now. No need to take anywhere near that amount of 3s a night anymore.

If we really do want that extra shooter -- not sure what these 2 are up to but two guys I'd look to sign cheap are Ryan Wittman or Adrian Thomas. Both 6'7", both can play 2 or 3 and both guys can really shoot the lights out from the perimeter (in particular Wittman -- that kid is a dynamite shooter). Why go out and commit big dollars to a Jason Kapono-type (we don't have the cap room for something like that anyway but just saying) when you can get what you need elsewhere cheaper? When you can shoot you can shoot -- don't know how much better off we'd be with a shooter with experience (with the much higher asking price that comes along with that) over a shooter that doesn't have the NBA experience yet. I personally think, for this type of player (a shooter), it doesn't matter much if at all. Guys like Wittman & Adrian Thomas know their roles & their craft -- they know how to get open. I personally don't see the advantage with a guy like Kapono, Korver etc. over these two. It's the same thing -- a specialist is a specialist. These are two good ones imo that I think we should consider with that last spot. Again, if we want an extra shooter -- I'd argue that a backup big man behind Amar'e that can score a little might be a little more vital.

Defense is the KEY to winning basketball, as long as Knicks are focused on that end of the court, opportunities to score will follow suit.

Kidd, Feltip, Prigger are all very capable PGs to drive and thrive and make the right decisions, ie: pop the rock out to the perimeter to find the open man.

Knicks haven't had such PG depth in years; now that Sh'itoni ain't running the show with shoot shoot SSOL, trust in Wood Son to hold his defense accountable first and foremost. Knicks got the three point shoot to boot.

I agree with your assessment but disagree on the impact our lack of sharpshooters will have. Last year we attempted the 2nd most threes a game but where horrible on makes and 3pt%. MDA strategy was to shoot until we were tired but with Woodson we will be working more inside the arc so we won't be a reliant 3 ball team like last year.
 
It's going to be a concern in the playoffs for sure. Every contending team needs at least two to three three point marksmen if they want to truly win the chip. The last two teams to win the championship had tons of three point specialists, aside from their superstars. Mavs had Terry, Peja, Stevenson, Kidd (his three was pure money in the playoffs). HEAT had Chalmers, Battier, Miller.

If we face the HEAT in the playoffs again next year, we're gonna need more than Novak as a three point threat on the floor, as Miami will surely look to lock him down once again. The idea seems to be to load up on defense and hope that the match becomes a gritty, ugly 70-80 point game. On offense, we'll have to rely on Melo once again, assuming that STAT struggles once again. It'll be interesting to see if the Knicks can get back to that defense first mentality. Can't. ****ing. Wait.
 
I said barely enough. But still feel that our 3 ball threat is adequite with Melo, JR, Novak, Felton, Kidd, Amar'e and prigoni being able of hitting the open 3. Every position outside of the Center has a player that can hit it. Yes there will be times when our line-up will not have that spacing but it will be up to woody to determine when that situation is appropriate. Still with Melo playing around 40 minutes a game we will always have a 3 ball threat and couple that with the fact that any of our PG's can hit an open 3 and I think it looks pretty solid.

Would rather have a Ronnie Brewer then a no defense shooter type (sorry novak).

This is the problem with our team to much "perimeter shooting IMO" i would like to see more attacking the basket and inside scoring, we are to much of a perimeter team as it is...we get to lob the ball to chandler sometimes but that's not enough we lack that inside scoring presence and get stuck relying on jump shots or Carmelo's talent.

I'm hoping Stoudemire can Successfully learn some post moves from Hakeem next month so we can have another way of attacking the defense.

As Far as having limited range i feel we have enough between Felton, Melo, Novak, Pablo, Kidd and who knows if Shump can come back healthy thats a extra Plus for us. If im not mistaken before his injury his jumper was really coming along. I really don't expect Felton, Kidd or Jr to have the kind of seasons they had last season so i feel our shooting will be much improved as well as our defense.

But aside from the shooting i think our defense is better than we may think and we could win alot of games based off our defense alone, Kidd, Camby, Chandler, Brewer, Felton and Shump are all good defenders. Melo is not that bad on defense as some may think and JR is a very underrated defender. I think we will be just fine.
 
I'm not worried about if we have enough three point shooters. I'm confident that the shooters we have right now will be enough. I agree with AF718, last year we shot way too many threes, it'd be nice to attack the rim more and get in the paint.
 
Spreading the floor is big, attacking the basket is bigger. We have guys who can get to the rim, so they gotta be relentless.
