Official 2017 NBA Draft Thread - June 22

Nice article on Dennis Smith Jr. (Extra ligament)

To say Dennis Smith Sr. and his son Dennis Smith Jr. are ?close? would be an understatement. The two are nearly inseparable.
Senior, a single parent in North Carolina, didn?t just raise Dennis Jr. to be one of the best incoming freshmen in college basketball next season (not to mention a projected top 5 NBA Draft pick next spring), but like so many parents before him, literally put a ball in Junior?s hands before he could even walk. He spent his son?s childhood teaching him the skills of a point guard, knowing that whether he grew tall or not, he?d always have a place on the court. And he coached him through thousands of games, from the youth level straight to high school, where Smith Sr. ran Team Loaded, one of the best youth programs in the country over the past few summers.
Smith Sr. has literally been there every step of the way, making it a bit ironic that in one of the most important moments of his son?s career, he was 3,000 miles away, at home in North Carolina. In one of the few games, and few events he didn?t attend, Adidas Nations ? a top high school showcase in Garden Grove, California ? Smith Jr., went down with a knee injury.
The terrified father received an unexpected call from a friend traveling with Smith Jr. Details were scarce, and Smith Sr. was terrified.
?Dennis is hurt, Dennis is hurt,? Smith Sr. remembered his friend screaming into the phone. ?I?ll call you right back [he said]. It was the worst feeling possible.?
It was the worst feeling possible, but if you?re worried about there being a sad ending to the story of a can?t-miss basketball prospect, don?t be. It?s actually quite the opposite. Dennis Jr. returned to the court this weekend at Adidas Nations ? this time as a college counselor ? and on the same courts where there was fear that his basketball dreams would be taken away, Junior instead added the latest and arguably most important chapter this past weekend. Playing in his first signature games since the injury, Smith Jr. not only survived, but thrived. Against some of the top college players in the country, Smith Jr. was a bona fide star, scoring 17 points, to go along with four assists and six steals, in front of NBA scouts, in his first full, five-on-five game with referees since the injury.
Most importantly, he showed both Friday night and throughout the weekend, that a year after the first major injury of his career, he was back to 100 percent.
Actually, even better than that.
?110 percent,? Smith Jr. said, when asked, on a scale of 1-100 how his knee was feeling. ?110 percent for sure.?
For Smith Jr., the road to recovery was hard, and started the day of his diagnosis last year. Smith Jr. knew before he even left California that he had torn his ACL, an injury that would require him to sit out at least 10 months and miss his entire senior year of basketball. But when he got home, he quickly realized that the injury ? while serious ? might not have been as worse as originally feared. There was no pain and swelling in his knee, allowing doctors to operate almost right away. And when they did go in for surgery, they found a surprise:

Smith Jr. had an extra ligament in his knee. If you didn?t even know that was possible, you?re certainly not alone, as only 20 percent of all humans have one, doctors told Smith Sr. But those who do have the added benefit of quicker recovery times when coming off serious injuries like the one Junior suffered.

?Adrian Peterson has the same thing,? Smith Sr. said. ?That?s what allowed him to come back so fast.?
Smith Jr. wasn?t back right away, but frankly it didn?t take nearly as long as many might think.
?I?m a single parent, I still had to take care of him like a baby for a while,? Smith Sr. said. But after those first few days, Junior did the rest. He began lifting free weights in bed just days after surgery, strengthening his back and shoulders, and making sure that even if his lower-body started out a little weaker, his upper body wouldn?t be.
Then came the lower body, which came a short time after. Just a few short weeks after the surgery, Smith Jr. wasn?t just back on his feet. He was back dunking.
?I had to slow him down,? Smith Sr. said. ?He was dunking two weeks after he got out [of surgery].?
With Smith Jr. on the road to recovery, it led to the biggest decision of his life, and then the surprising, arguably even bigger decision that followed afterward.
Smith Jr. committed to NC State in November, deciding to attend the school that his father and grandmother grew up rooting for. He chose the Wolfpack because, as he said, their coaching staff built trust ?by coming to every game they could come to." But then came another decision: He wanted to enroll early. With his senior year of basketball off the table, he began to wonder: Why wait to the summer to get to campus, if he could possibly get there in January, in time for the winter semester?
?His dream was always to play in the McDonald?s All-American game,? Smith Sr. said. ?Once we realized that was off the table, he asked me ?Dad is this possible?? It was actually his idea [to enroll early]. It came from him.?
The idea behind the decision was multi-fold. For starters, he needed to rehab, and both father and son knew that the best possible treatment he could get on the knee would come from the NC State coaching staff. Plus, it would also give him a jump-start on academics. Once on campus, Smith Jr. thrived academically as well. He finished 18 credits during a time that he could have easily been at home, cruising through his final season of high school ball.
Instead, he was on campus getting to know his teammates, making friends and enjoying one class in particular.
?Sociology,? Smith Jr. said, when asked what his favorite class was. ?That?s my major. I like sociology. It?s the study of human interaction.?
That last statement is ironic as well, since Smith Jr. spent plenty of time interacting on the court with his teammates. He watched from the sidelines as the team struggled last season, but was cleared to play in April, and has spent as much time on the court as possible getting to know them.
He played with teammates Maverick Rowan and Abdul-Malik Abu at Adidas Nations this weekend, and anyone watching closely could see an already emerging chemistry among the trio. Add in other members of a highly-ranked recruiting class and several other returning upperclassmen, and the Wolfpack could be in for a surprise 2016-17 season.
Things didn?t go as planned last year, but Smith Jr. is coming to change that next year.
?Come in and win games,? Smith Jr. said of his stated goal. ?The ultimate goal for everybody is to win the national championship, but we?ll take it one game at a time.?
That?s obviously music to the Wolfpack fans who spent the whole weekend following Smith Jr.?s every move at Adidas Nations. Articles were written and tweets were shared about his progress, but most important, they were simply glad to see him 100 percent. Or 110 percent.
Now it?s time to win big, and Smith Sr. thinks that?s exactly what NC State will do.
?I?m going to tell you, his mentality is just completely different,? Smith Sr. said. ?He?s bigger, stronger and he?s not backing down from anyone.?
As they say, what a difference a year makes, right?

Oh!

I wonder if C. Lee could get some tread on this? Like C. Lee and both our 2nd rd picks for #12? Problem is other teams can beat this offer!

Oh Again!

Sounds from this tweet possibly the 5th pick is in play.

#5, 2018 1st(Kings or Sixers) for #kporzee

#5, Skal, 2018 1st(Kings), 2018 1st(Sixers) for #kporzee, #8

#5 for #8, #44, #58

You and I both know that PJ has shown no indication that he could pull off any of these trades.

Duke's Amile Jefferson was among six players to work out with the New York Knicks on Tuesday, according to Mike Vorkunov.

The Knicks also reportedly worked out South Carolina guard Sindarius Thornwell, Kentucky guard Isaiah Briscoe, Florida guard Canyon Barry, Colorado guard Derrick White and Columbia's Luke Petrasek.

The 24-year-old Jefferson and 21-year-old Petrasek were the only two forwards who worked out with the Knicks. Jefferson, a 6-foot-9, 224-pound forward, averaged 10.9 points and 8.4 rebounds in his fifth season for the Blue Devils.

Petrasek, 21, averaged 15.1 points and 5.7 rebounds in 29.2 minutes per game with Columbia in his senior season. As a junior, he averaged 10.2 points and 4.5 rebounds. He is also the grandson of Connie Simmons, who played five seasons with the Knicks from 1949 to 1954.

Thornwell averaged 21.4 points and 7.1 rebounds for the Game****s; Briscoe averaged 12.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Wildcats; Barry averaged 11.4 points for the Gators; and White averaged 18.1 points for Colorado as a sophomore.

The Knicks have the Nos. 8, 44 and 58 picks in the draft.

This guy does not like Frank. Made the same point about his D that I saw on SBNation when his Strasborg coach praised his D, who was he guarding a 5'11" PG that played in the DLeague, the level of competition he's facing over there is just not the same. He's definitely not the athlete DSJ is, look at his elevation on the 2 handed dunk in this video. If the Knicks take him over DSJ I think it's a mistake despite the claim he'll be a better fit in the triangle.

I concur.... there's just too much upside and potential with Dennis Smith Jr & Jonathon Isaac, that it would be too risky, too illogical, to reach for an 18-yr-old unknown.

Remember, 18 months ago.... Smith was an elite prospect, on same level as Ball & Fultz. I see his knee injury as a blessing, in the sense that without it he never falls to 8.

I'm afraid Phil will base this decision on Euro love and triangle blindness.... just b/c we got lucky with KP.... we better not get cute here.... don't take French kid just bc.... you have to be absolutely sold on him to take him over 2 studs in DSJ & JI.

probably we got the best we could with kp and the 4th pick... but lucky??? I don't see him as a building block.... nice player... but a block... I don't see it..

It's not Okafor or Russell, so at least we got a viable professional baller.

Oh so Ball is working out with Lake Show before Fox, the clues keep coming in...

Then there's this tidbit...

With reports surfacing that the LA Lakers and former UCLA guard Lonzo Ball have finalized the details of a workout and face to face meeting in LA next week, there is a growing sense that unless Lonzo absolutely blows the doors off, he may not be the Lakers’ guy.

Yeah Fox is going to seal the deal the following week. I think I have the first 3 picks right. Basketball Insiders is also a report Phx may be looking to move Knight, they have Ulis as a backup, not sure if we would be interested or have a deal to get Knight. Which makes me feel more and more confident Phx will definitely draft Tatum at 4.

Former Kentucky guard, Isaiah Briscoe, told zagsblog.com that his workout with the Knicks went "very well."

In his sophomore season, the 6-foot-3, 209 pound Briscoe averaged 12.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 30.4 minutes per game.

Kentucky head coach John Calipari had high praise for Briscoe after he declared for the NBA Draft saying, "Isaiah is a winner. Physically and mentally he's a pit bull with skills with the ball. We averaged nearly 30 wins a season over the last two years and Isaiah played a big part in all of them. Isaiah defends, he rebounds and he creates shots for others. I am so proud of his improvement over his time here and am looking forward to seeing his continued growth at the next level."

Briscoe was among six players the Knicks worked out, including Duke's Amile Jefferson, North Carolina's Justin Jackson and South Carolina's Sindarius Thornwell.

According to DraftExpress.com, Briscoe is not projected to be drafted at the June 22 NBA Draft.

Lavar will be shocked if the Lakers don't pick his boy. If they don't pick him, who do the Lakers pick.

Fox or a slight chance it could be Jackson. Right now %age breakdown 50% Fox, 40% Ball, 10% Jackson

Ball will work out June 7th, Fox is working out for them week of June 11-17. It's the very reason news broke last week Ball's camp have had preliminary talks with Sixers about a possible workout meet and greet. That was the first "major" clue, their camp knows they are not a lock to be drafted by the Lakers.

Ball will be a 1 to 3 pick ..
It will be good going first in the draft to the Boston Celtricks program.
But it will be great to be pick 2nd to go to the Lakers Magic Johnson tutor program.
However, being pick 3rd by Philly leads to a successful winning career having young athletic stars Embiid and Simmons as teammates.

I believe Philly won't PASS on BALL if he's there at 3, at the same time his Laker workout could create an intriguing plot twist. There's a chance Ball could slip further than we personally think

The target appears to be Justin Jackson, although based on what I'm reading Jackson is likely to be drafted inside the lottery

Portland owns the No. 15, 20 and 26 picks in this draft, and several teams are eager to get into that mix. The Knicks have inquired about some combination of the Blazers’ picks, a source said, and those talks are ongoing. New York has the eighth pick and could trade down for a combination of picks, though the preference for the Knicks is to keep their pick and add one of Portland’s.

Portland would have to give up all picks in order for consideration to move off the 8th pick. I mentioned they could be a draft day trade partner as we got the draft discussion going

Phil is coming for your neck htr10...:teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

Portland would be a great place to trade Melo to .. for either Portland 15th or 20th pick along with Al-Farouq Aminu ..
Lillard n CJ McCollum plus Melo would put Portland in the 2nd round of the playoffs in the West.

I doubt Magic Johnson would let a 6.6 pass-first PG Ball go pass the 2nd pick.
Magic Johnson like all the outrageous hype Lavar Ball is giving to his son .. great publicity even from Haters

Melo and KOQ or LEE for 2 of those picks would be good, but I doubt Melo would allow that. A shame tho.

I wonder if Lance Thomas and KOQ for a pick works.

I don't think I trade 8 unless I get all 3 plus something else.

What bothers me most about us having the 8th, 44th, 58th pick, plus we fans would like to go after another first round pick in the 2017 draft may give us 2 or 3 potential rookies for our roster, and 1 or 2 players for our D.League team.
The problem lies in our last season roster where we had 6 rookies (Baker/Randle/Kuz/NDour/Plumlee/Willie) on our roster without a full season in the NBA that showed little to no promise or future potential.
Willie and N'Dour showed some future promise during the mid-season games to be keepers for next season.
However, KP performance showed lack of improvement in so many areas of the game throughout his 2nd NBA season as if we had 7 rookies on our roster without a full season experience in the NBA.

The Knicks coaching staff has not been very promising on tutoring young and experience players on defense the past 3 seasons, so i wonder how many rookies n 2nd season players will the Knicks have on the roster at the start of the 2017-18 regular season?

This is win-win for me. Either I'm right and PJ once again sells for penny on the dollar (a la the Tyson Chandler and Shumpert/JR Smith trades) or I'm wrong and he actually pulls off a good trade that helps this franchise for once.

My guess is that Portland knows PJ's trade history and is looking to fleece us if we want #15, #20, and/or #26 in the upcoming draft.

I don't think Melo will allow himself to be traded to Portland. KP for even all 3 of those picks doesn't get me excited. I'm highly skeptical Kyle O'Quinn or Courtney Lee gets you a 1st round pick (maybe #26). So, either we can trade our #8 pick, which seems like a mistake even if we get all 3 of those picks (#20 and #26 could easily be D-leaguers when the year is done) or we trade a future 1st round pick, which seems insane because we're likely to be back into the lottery next year.
