Tim Leiweke, the former Staples Center executive who is heading the Knicks? presidential search, apparently listens to Jerry West.
After West contacted Leiweke to endorse David Griffin, the former Cavaliers general manager contacted the Knicks and will be among the initial interviews, according to an ESPN report. West, a Clippers adviser, had a poor relationship with deposed Knicks president Phil Jackson during their time together with the Lakers.
Griffin could turn into a serious candidate because he requires no compensation, unlike the Raptors? Masai Ujiri.
With Jackson gone and Griffin in, perhaps LeBron James, who warred with Jackson over his ?posse?? remark, would consider the Knicks again ? as he did in 2010 ? when he becomes a 2018 free agent. James has spoken highly of Griffin?s work in building a team that went to three straight NBA Finals before owner Dan Gilbert let him go this month.
Knicks GM and acting president Steve Mills also will be considered for the permanent position in what is expected to be an long process, according to an NBA source.
The Knicks figure Mills will lead the Knicks across free agency starting Saturday at 12:01 a.m. and essentially build the 2017-18 club. Therefore, there is no great urgency to fill the position.
Kentucky coach John Calipari denied a report his intermediaries contacted the Knicks to express his interest. He has been interested in a high-profile NBA gig for years and always has the Knicks on his radar.
?NO ONE has contacted the Knicks on my behalf,? Calipari wrote on Twitter. ?I am the coach at Kentucky and will be for a long time!?
Calipari, who chided the Knicks for not drafting Kentucky shooting guard Malik Monk last week, worked the dual role with the Nets from 1996-1999 and has long wanted to redeem himself.
Mills was Knicks president for the 2013-14 season before owner James Dolan pulled the rug out from under him to hire Jackson ? arguably the worst waste of $60 million in NBA history.
Leiweke already has hired Ujiri once before ? stealing him from Denver when he worked for the Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. Ujiri has five years left on his pact with the Raptors and could require a first-round pick as compensation.
Memphis executive Ed Stefanski recently signed an extension, but he is respected around the NBA and helped Rod Thorn build the Nets into a powerhouse in the early 2000s. The Wharton grad is highly regarded as both a strong numbers guy and talent evaluator. The Knicks also reportedly have had internal discussions about esteemed Thunder GM Sam Presti, but he?s a legend in Oklahoma City and would require compensation.
Liberty president Isiah Thomas confirmed Thursday a Post report he won?t be a candidate.
