Knicks fall short to rivals Nets after failed comeback

The Knicks trailed by 19 points early in the third quarter, and by double digits for most part of the game before admitting defeat 113-109 to their Brooklyn rivals.

Kyrie Irving made a key three pointer with 22 seconds left on the clock, and the Knicks’ comeback was history.

The Knicks played an incredible fourth quarter led by Wayne Ellington’s 9 points – all of them from behind the arc, and Kevin Knox, who scored 8 of his total 16 points on the final 12 minutes.

In a span of four minutes, the Knicks went on a 15-2 run to take their first lead of the game (109-106) since 2-0. Irving then decided to take the game into his own hands, launched a two pointer to make it 109-108, then, following a missed jumpshot from Marcus Morris, he nailed the dagger to give the Nets the lead back.

New York had plenty of time left on the clock but Julius Randle turned the ball over, sacrificing Knicks’ chances to steal the win.

Allonzo Trier led the Knicks with 22 points off the bench, going 6-7 from the field. RJ Barrett scored 16 and had 6 steals while Randle finished with 14 buckets and 11 boards.

Elfrid Payton scored 10 in his debut as the starting point guard.

For the Nets, Irving scored a game high 26 points while Spencer Dinwiddie added 20 off the bench.
