Knicks start 2024 with thriller win against Timberwolves as OG Anunoby makes his debut

In a thrilling showdown, the Knicks secured a hard-fought victory against the Timberwolves with a final score of 112-106. The much-anticipated debut of OG Anunoby electrified the crowd, earning him a warm ovation from the fans. Anunoby scored 17 points including 3-6 from the deep to the team’s triumph.

Julius Randle was the driving force for the Knicks, delivering an outstanding performance with 39 points and 9 rebounds, shooting an impressive 14-24 from the field. Jalen Brunson, not to be overlooked, achieved a career-high 14 assists, along with 16 points.

Randle’s crucial layup with just 23 seconds remaining secured a comfortable 109-102 lead for New York, effectively sealing the game. However, it wasn’t a walk in the park, as the Timberwolves mounted a fierce comeback in the fourth quarter, initiating a 17-5 run. OG Anunoby’s early departure due to fouling out added pressure on the Knicks’ defense, especially after the Wolves narrowed the lead to 95-99.

Anunoby’s impact was felt on both ends of the court. His solid defense, particularly against Anthony Edwards, coupled with three timely three-pointers and a couple of emphatic dunks assisted by Donte DiVincenzo – who scored 15 points, made him a standout player of the night. Anunoby’s three-pointer with 4:58 left in the third quarter marked the peak of the Knicks’ dominance, securing their largest lead of the game at 83-61.

The second quarter proved to be a turning point for the Knicks, outscoring the Timberwolves 38-17 after initially trailing 32-23 at the end of the first. Isaiah Hartenstein, who contributed 7 points and 9 rebounds, provided a highlight reel with three impressive blocks against Rudy Gobert.

Despite the formidable performances from Anthony Edwards (35 pts) and Karl-Anthony Towns (29 pts), the Knicks managed to quell the Timberwolves’ comeback attempt. The victory not only snapped a three-game losing streak for the Knicks to start 2024 but also showcased their resilience against the top team in the West.
