Kalinsky served as the official photographer of Madison Square Garden beginning in 1966, capturing a vibrant tapestry of sports, entertainment, and culture for over five decades. His work chronicled the heartbeat of New York City, etching memories into the minds of Knicks and Rangers fans, music lovers, and boxing aficionados alike.

For Knicks fans, Kalinsky’s most legendary image remains that of an injured Willis Reed, limping onto the court for Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals. Reed’s courage and Kalinsky’s artful timing became an enduring symbol of perseverance. Equally iconic are Kalinsky’s stylish portraits of Walt “Clyde” Frazier, whose bold fashion choices and charismatic presence in the late ’60s and early ’70s were perfectly captured through Kalinsky’s eye.

Rangers fans will forever remember Kalinsky’s images from the team’s thrilling Stanley Cup victory in 1994, a triumph 54 years in the making. His photographs of Mark Messier and the jubilant celebration that followed remain cherished by the hockey community.

Kalinsky also captured moments that transcended sports, such as the “Fight of the Century” in 1971, when Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier squared off at Madison Square Garden. His images from that historic night resonate as powerful reminders of a golden age of boxing.

Beyond sports, Kalinsky’s work encompassed the grandeur of music and entertainment at MSG, preserving memories of performances by legends such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Bruce Springsteen. His knack for framing not just the action, but the emotion of a moment, solidified his status as one of the greatest visual storytellers of his era.

Born in Hempstead, New York and raised in New York City, Kalinsky developed a love for photography early in life, a passion that would take him around the world but always return him to the world’s most famous arena. His body of work earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the Madison Square Garden Walk of Fame in 2001.

George Kalinsky is survived by daughter Rachelle, his son Lee and grandchildren Emily, Jason, Josh and Jackie, sister Marilyn and brother Howard. While he may be gone, his photographs will continue to speak volumes, reminding generations to come of the power of an image to inspire, unite, and celebrate the human spirit.

Rest in peace, George Kalinsky, a master of moments.
