Official 2017 NBA Draft Thread - June 22

Ntikilina, Dotson, Hayes.... notice a trend? Active, hungry defenders.... Hayes has some Draymond Green in him.

-----

Dotson, who played the 1, 2 and 3 in college, says he wants to work on "consistently making the three-ball."

"Forty percent is sustainable, I wouldn't say 45," he told DraftExpress.com in a recent interview. "I gotta keep working, keep working, keep working. But I would say 40 percent and higher is definitely what I'm reaching for, that's my goal."

Houston coach Kelvin Sampson, a former NBA assistant, believes Dotson has a future in the league.

"He can score out of actions as good as anybody I have coached," Sampson told ZAGSBLOG. "He has great footwork and great technique in everything he does. He's extremely disciplined and a monster worker. His game really translates to the NBA level because of the things he does besides scoring.

"He averaged seven rebounds and will defend the other team's best scorer. He's an outstanding shooter and is tough. I love this kid. He's a winner."

Dotson was one of three Oregon players booted from the program in May 2014 in the wake of rape allegations. But no criminal charges were ever filed. He sat out the 2014-15 season before spending his final two seasons at Houston.

Asked what he learned from the experience, he said: "Just to stay focused, learn from it, a maturity. Just everything that guys don't get to experience right away, I got that experience early at 20 years old. Just my maturity and just having the chance to play again and just working hard. It made me work even harder. It made me hungrier."
Sampson was McHale's lead ass't in charge of defense with the Rockets before he took that job as head coach with Houston. High praise from him for a 4 yr. player, he might be a steal at 44, the guy is also built like a tank. If he plays like he's built I'm going to love this kid

Dotson might be the player I'm most intrigued about, looks like someone who's gonna come in and work. His shot looks pretty good but but but...what about Baker/Kuz/Chason seems like we have a little too much going on and I doubt these guys get a fair shot this season. Many of them probably won't play a lot until about midway point in season unless we make some moves.

now THIS leaves me confused, but i guess by now i should not be surprised about that. well it looks like phil has found a potential replacement for KP if number 6 decides to act up this season. he shoots 3s and he blocks shots. great. but i don't remember seeing a whole lot of post-up play from this guy. if phil wants more post-up play from a 7 footer who can shoot 3s... why this guy? does he think it'll be different this time? i'm eager to see what this kid can do come summer league, but... it still doesn't make sense.
Let's not go overboard with some of these 2 way contract players Phil has been signing. Every year there are 2 or 3 guys they sign. They get a writeup about them about how well they did in college, then they play in the D-League for a season or less and then they're gone.

Really Pop likes DRose, seems he wouldn't given his lack of defense. I don't know how many times I've seen Pop get into a players face after they blew a defensive assignment, he'd be nose to nose a lot with Rose. He's also not a 3 pt shooter but I do remember a Spurs game where Sean Elliot was raving about DRose that he was back to his MVP form so maybe those 2 have been talking.

Unless her sources are flaky, Ramona is usually pretty solid though

well that's definitely true.... but it still doesn't make sense lol.

Forgot Grant whom I was hopeful for
And if the Knicks hadn't fallen to 4 because of bad luck in the drawing the Knicks would have selected Okafor. Couldn't knock PJ if he had selected Jahil because he was highly touted but getting KP was a little lucky. PJ drafting hasn't been anything special like you show so I don't get why people say it is.

To be fair to PHIL, most second rounders never pan out.... or even late first rounders. I think if you hit a HR with 1 second round pick every 4 years, you give yourself a pat on the back.

I hate to defend Jax, but he did find what appears to be a solid player in WHG in the s cons round.

And, he gets credit for KP too. He could've taken Winslow, WCS, Mudiay.... geez, imagine if we grabbed Mudiay?

So.... 1 potential franchise stud in the lottery.... in his only lottery pick in the first 3 years.... pretty good.

He missed on Grant, or gave up too quickly. But, he did flip him for Holiday. Let's see if he keeps him now.

Now, while I blast Phil for not obtaining more picks, and getting more out of the draft last 4 years.... he has done well with the picks we've had.... given where we've selected.

Not when you're picking 4, you're being gifted a chance at not messing up. A true measure of someone touted as good/great is what you draft when the cards are stacked more so against you. Buford is a GREAT drafter, that's the measuring stick. Because by all accounts the GM from the Cavs drafted well before Griffin right...Kyrie/Thompson/Waiters/Wiggins only missed on Bennett, oh wait we might say how could you miss on Bennett when he was picked #1 overall well that's my point at 4, it isn't that hard to miss.

As Tig pointed out Phil admitted he would've selected Okafor. Gaines probably made all these picks anyway, he scouted Nitty too. If these picks from this draft stick and they make a mark in this league let's revisit this discussion

I do think Gaines should get all the credit, but smart people surround themselves with people who can do their job.

I do think we lucked out with KP bc we fell from 2 to 4.... this pick
will make or break Phil and NYK.

We had our choice between 4 equally talented guards and we took Frank over Kennard, DSJ and Monk.

We probably picked the wrong guy. We'll see tho.

Anyway, PHil has been an abject failure with everything else.

He'll probably make the team cuhz fundamentals with the underhand technique...Phil is probably drooling(still sleeping that is, lol) at a chance to use him as a prop in one of his surprise bumrush of Honacek's practices for a zen schooling session

Here's a good NY Times piece on our latest Summer League signing. He's a nuclear physics major with a 4.0 GPA. In his case if the triangle were rocket science it wouldn't matter, he'd be able to handle it. Youngest son of Rick Barry who will be on the team with our other 3 draft choices in Orlando.

Whatever brilliant scout invite the 6.5 undrafted Deonte Burton of Iowa State to his camp summer league tournament will get a bonus and raise of pay.
I like Dotson .. but Burton is 5 times better than Baker n Randle talent put together.

I think it's hilarious that a guy like PJ, who is being heavily criticized for having let the game pass him by with his commitment to a now likely outdated system, is bringing to Summer League a player who shoots underhanded free throws.

Looks like Dennis Smith didn't want the Knicks to draft him by saying no to a Knick workout which may have been for other reasons other than not wanting the Knicks to draft him but to withhold his medical records says he did not want to be a Knick. Not a good look for the Knicks that I hope changes because we already can't attract FA's and having draft picks resist the Knicks would be detrimental.

Per the Lowe Post Podcast with reporters Ian Begley and Howard Beck, DSJ's team did not give the Knicks access to relevant medical records. It's not a certainty that this was done to keep the Knicks away from drafting DSJ, but logic would suggest just that.

Knicks were considering Monk, Ntilikina, DSJ, and Donovan Mitchell, but went with Ntilikina because Phil wanted him for the triangle fit. The Knicks staff was split on all of these guys, but there was no overwhelming consensus one way or the other.
This should at least give Knicks fans some peace as it relates to Knicks' passing on DSJ.
Draft discussion begins at roughly 30:20 of the podcast, comment about DSJ medical records at 31:15: http://www.espn.com/espnradio/play?id=20104669

Well, if this were true then you can't blame NYK for not rolling dice on a kid with suspect knees.... then again, maybe this is being released now to cover up humiliation of being passed over by 8 teams.... easy to claim now he didn't want NY after NY went another direction.

If true tho, still not a reason to pass on a kid (like Nets with Kobe). Draft him anyway bc we can he do about it?

We requested medical records but Phil refused to work out the kid with the suspect knees at first chance...The kid who increased his vertical 6 inches after turning his knee into shredded pork, Gimmie A Break!

Regardless Mills said he would've drafted Knits anyway, so IMO it was a foregone conclusion who we wanted. Let's hope he's ready by next season and learns all the tricks of the trade from ALL-NBAer Ron Baker this yr.

Disrespectful!!!

Is this a sign he's about to be traded? Included in a Melo deal?

No, nothing is a sign of anything. Is it still the 2017 off-season even? It feels like years ago we started talking about this franchise making some trades to shed salary and acquire assets.

Bagley already is regarded as a Top 3 NBA draft pick ? next year! Technically a high school senior, he?s hoping the NCAA will grant him ?re-classification? status so he can play this season at Duke then enter the draft.

------
Add this to the other 2 studs, and there's 3 guys to tank for.
