Official 2017 NBA Draft Thread - June 22

Dennis Smith Jr. - G - Player
Ian Begley of ESPN is reporting that "some members" of the 76ers are big fans of Dennis Smith Jr.
The 76ers have the third overall pick in the draft and Smith is projected to be a top-10 pick, so Philly may be willing to trade down if the N.C. State product is their guy. Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer said on Wednesday that he's hearing Smith could fall in the draft, but there have been plenty of reports that refute that as well. The hype around Smith Jr. ramped up a bit after he recorded an incredible 48-inch vertical during a Lakers workout, and he's scheduled to host a private workout in front of several teams on Thursday.

Knicks interested in Duke star?

Here's a new name to put on the Knicks' radar at No. 8: Duke sharpshooter Luke Kennard.

According to hoops insider Adam Zagoria, the Knicks worked out Kennard and could put him in consideration for selection with their first-round pick.

--------

I think this is another "trade down" target.

Oh god, if we take Kennard in the 1st round, kill me now. Another shooter/scorer whose defense is suspect and in Kennard's case, has mediocre physical tools for a shooting guard by NBA standards at best. Almost every team in the NBA (except probably us) is going to have a perimeter defensive specialist who will make this guy's life miserable in the NBA and he is going to have to rely on a playmaker to get him open shots (which we won't have since we will have drafted Kennard instead of a lead guard).

htr10... I'd put it another way.... another slow Caucasian with limited skills... maybe we can make a deal with MJ for adam Morrison... but that just shows a great player, may be a $hitty owner... just as a wonderful coach (PJax) may be a $hitty exec...

If the scout isn't Gaines then who's over there?

7 days to go, if Ntilikina is our guy, so be it. At least drafting him makes sense on paper. I'm beginning to doubt more and more that Monk or Isaac will fall to us and Dennis Smith just doesn't seem like a guy PJ would draft, even though he was who I predicted us to take a few days ago.

I think it's going to be Ntilikina too. But I'd take Smith, Isaac, Monk and Mitchell over him.

Triangle! Triangle! Triangle!

mafra
North Carolina's top scoring threat, Justin Jackson, said his workout with the Knicks Tuesday was entirely different than the rest he has participated in, per NY Post's Marc Berman.
Jackson, who played a vital role in UNC's championship run this past season, had six workouts prior to his visit with the Knicks. This one was unique.
"It was more teaching than all the other ones," Jackson said. "With the triangle and the other types of offenses they run, I would say it was a little more mental than physical."
Jackson picked up quickly on the triangle and thinks that the workout went well.
"I picked it up pretty easily -- everyone picked it up as time went on," Jackson said. "That helped a lot as far the workout, going into different actions. For me it was just basketball, making plays and reads."
Knicks head coach Jeff Hornacek ran the workout that included Oregon forward Dillon Brooks, Wisconsin forward Nigel Hayes, and Louisville forward Jaylen Johnson. President Phil Jackson also "stepped in a few times to say what he wanted to see."

Why would a 3 year unsuccessful Triangle-offense (LOSER) Knicks team hold draft work-outs to teach the players the triangle-offense when the team average a 30 win season for 3 consecutive seasons?
Its not like the Knicks Triangle-Offense won a championship or made it to the playoffs the past 3 seasons.
Truth be told .. the triangle offense were only successful n worked well when the team had two, three, or four star-players and super-star players on the team.

The Knicks offseason is starting off as LOSERS weeks before the 2017 Draft night .. its like patching up a flat car tire the forth time. AGGY!

There is "some talk around the NBA" that Dennis Smith Jr. could fall in the draft, according to Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer.
This report comes from Charlotte, so it's worth a mention on the NC State product. Smith Jr. has a ton of skill at the point guard position, but his size at 6'3" with a 6'3" wingspan is clearly his biggest negative. He reportedly did well at his workout for the Lakers and most expect him to go in the top 10. Expect to see plenty of reports in the next week or so.

There are multiple reports teams picking below us want him, Charlotte is one of them. Also the Sixers are trying to get him to workout as well as the Celtics(it was believed he worked out for them last Monday but it may have only been a visit)

Well the six teams have been revealed and it's pretty much as I was figuring. I notice Philly wasn't one of those teams. So either they are working back channels to get a workout scheduled with him or they are fake hustling trying to see what team(Kings?) below them have high interest

For the record we were one of those 6 teams, so if we weren't interested in working him out face-to-face when we had every chance to, why did we send Mark Hughes to see him up close?

The Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, Charlotte Hornets, Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat all sent representatives to watch Dennis Smith at his Pro Day, as Basketball Insiders first reported.Among those on hand to watch Smith were Hornets coach Steve Clifford and general manager Rich Cho, Timberwolves president and coach Tom Thibodeau, as well as Knicks director of player personnel Mark Hughes, league sources told Basketball Insiders.[FONT=&quot]

Basketball Insiders Mock 3 of 4 have us picking Smith. Not to mention another article from The Post on the kid

Not sure if this is what he showed them yesterday. I don't think we'll have a shot at him if this is how he's performing if not better.

Waiting on some kind of news with LakeShow 2nd meeting with Ball. He penned a very cool letter to his dad in The Players Tribune

WOW, just wow! Ya'll wanted Danny to make a move and sounds like he's still stockpiling while getting Top talent. He just may draft DSJ or I'll go out on a limb and say Josh Jackson

He can still land an All-Star All-NBA talent by making this move prior to

Good move by Ainge, he's got a ton of PG talent so that's not the Celtics biggest need. Why not drop a few places where the guy you want Jackson would still be available and get another 1st next year out of it.

I think Josh Jackson is going to be the best player from this draft and I said this when I started the thread. Just as I said Thon Maker stands the chance to be the best player from his draft class. But I think Josh's progression may be Kawhi like in nature, may not see it or jump out at you right away but he'll eventually get there. The only difference is, Josh has always been thought of as a Top Prospect.

Sounds like all they're waiting for is for Markelle to pass his meds

Dogonitt .. i was hoping the big talk on "super-teams" would get Phil to entice Danny on trading for Melo to start his super-team to beat the Cavs in a series .. Phil throw in the 8th pick too .. in return we get the Number 1 pick plus Crowder n Smart .. Smart combo-guard talent on both sides of the court are only going to get better to make his winning performance a decade-keeper .... we dont have no wins having Mills n Phil representing the club the same as Dolan does .. aggy

This 2017 draft class has a lot of NBA all-stars coming out of it in 1st n 2nd round .. it doesn't matter how many dum-dum head-coaches got jobs in the NBA today, this draft class will make them look good.
There are a couple of players in this draft that will go undrafted and still make it to the NBA, their names hasn't been on any mock drafts.

Only Billy King would make a trade like that. Ainge isn't that stupid or remotely interested in Melo.

There's a scenario where Boston selects Josh Jackson and Philly selects Fultz but that places extreme faith in the Lakers drafting Ball. Also it has been believed both teams picking after Boston like Jackson to some degree. From Philly's perspective why would they give up a valuable asset if there was any slight tipping of hand teams knowing they like Jackson...

Celtics are either going to get
Fultz/#1
Jackson/#1
DSJ/#1

Probably was the very reason the Lakers immediately leaked supposedly how impressive Fultz was in his workout for them. They don't want Boston and Philly to have leverage. Ball convinced the Lakers to come see him workout on his turf(like his day-to-day regimen), never heard of a prospect trying to talk his way onto a team in this manner. Wreaks of desperation...I think they know Philly may not be jiving with them.

Jackson hasn't worked out for Boston to my knowledge, I think they're trying to schedule one. So it's probably Philly who wants Jackson the most between the two. Which they along with Phoenix are the two teams I figured could've made a promise to him

President Magic Johnson "is in love" with Markelle Fultz and may try to move up to No. 1 possibly with Julius Randle included in a trade, according to Jonathan Givony of Draft Express.
The top pick looks to be on the block and it sounds like the Lakers and 76ers could get involved in a bidding war. The Lakers have said Brandon Ingram is really the only untouchable player, so unloading Randle is a possibility. The Celtics are expected to go after a power forward in free agency, so someone like Randle may change things. He's having a productive offseason and has lost some weight this summer.

Josh Jackson's workout in Los Angeles "did not go well at all," according to Jonathan Givony of Draft Express.
The report adds he brought high energy, but struggled with his shooting and handle. It sounds like the Celtics do like Josh Jackson, which may be part of the motivation to trade back with the 76ers. Jackson does have some off-court concerns and he was suspended at Kansas last season. He is still a near lock to go in the top five.
