Knicks roll past Sixers in historic Game 1 blowout: a statement win to open the second round

Let’s be honest – nobody really knew what to expect from game 1 of this second round series. The Philadelphia 76ers had just come out of a grueling 7-game war against Boston, with barely a day of rest between that and stepping into Madison Square Garden to face a Knicks team that looked sharp, hungry, and frankly dangerous. And that’s exactly how it played out.

New York didn’t just win. The Knicks rolled past the Sixers 137-98, and in doing so, they became the first team in NBA history to win three straight playoff games by a margin of 25 or more points. Let that sink in. Three games in a row. Twenty-five plus. That’s not basketball, that’s a statement.

Jalen Brunson was, once again, the engine driving everything. The man finished with 35 points on a very efficient 12-of-18 shooting, and what made it even more impressive was how early he put his stamp on the game. Brunson dropped 25 of those 35 in the first half alone – essentially putting the game to bed before the halftime buzzer even sounded. OG Anunoby added 18 points, and both Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges chipped in 17 each. This wasn’t a one-man show. This was the whole band playing in perfect tune.

Philadelphia actually held their own for the opening minutes. The first 10 minutes were relatively competitive – the Sixers were there, present, giving some resistance. But then things started to unravel gradually, and by the end of the first quarter New York was already up 33-25. Then the second quarter happened, and the Knicks just came at them like a freight train. By halftime, it was 74-51. Game effectively over.

Coach Nick Nurse saw enough by the end of the third quarter. At that point, there was nothing left to manage, nothing left to salvage. He dropped the towel, knowing the game was done and there was no point running his guys into the ground in a battle that had long been decided.

And yet, the Knicks kept winning even when head coach Mike Brown sent in the reserves. Every single Knick scored in this game and every player logged at least 8 minutes. The whole roster rotated, the whole roster contributed. That kind of depth is genuinely hard to deal with in a playoff series.

On the other side, Paul George led Philadelphia with 17 points, which tells you all you need to know about how the night went for the Sixers’ stars. Joel Embiid managed just 14 points, and he did most of that damage from the free throw line – because on actual field goal attempts, he was a miserable 3-of-11 from the floor. The Knicks’ defense smothered him and made life very uncomfortable in the paint. Tyrese Maxey, who has been one of the more reliable scorers all season, was completely washed out – finishing with 13 points on 3-of-9 shooting. Not the performances Philadelphia needed from their top guys.

Now, in fairness to the Sixers, context matters here. These guys came into New York after just closing a seven-game series against the Celtics, with a single day of rest separating them from that war and this one. That’s physically brutal, and it’s hard to imagine they were at full capacity, mentally or physically. It doesn’t excuse a 39-point loss, but it explains part of it.

That said – and this is important – it doesn’t mean game 2 will look anything like this. A day more of rest, some film work, some adjustments from Nurse, and the Sixers could come back with a completely different energy on Wednesday night. Playoff series have a way of evening out, and Philly has too much talent to go down quietly.

But here’s the thing. If the Knicks keep playing the way they played last night – that suffocating defense, that relentless offensive firepower, Brunson doing Brunson things from the jump – this series might be over a lot sooner than anyone expected. Game 2 tips off Wednesday night from 7 pm, and if New York brings that same intensity, Philadelphia is going to need more than just a day of rest to figure out an answer.
