Knicks spoil Wembanyama’s MSG debut, ousting the Spurs 126-105
What a night at the Garden! The Knicks showcased not only their basketball prowess but also their swanky new city edition uniforms in a resounding 126-105 victory over the Spurs.
The home team set the tone from the get-go, storming out with the first 13 points of the game, and from there, they never relinquished control.
The Knicks’ trio of Jalen Brunson, RJ Barrett, and Julius Randle stole the spotlight. Brunson scored a game-high 25 points, supported by Barrett’s 24 points and Randle’s impressive double-double of 23 points and 16 rebounds.
Despite the anticipation surrounding the Spurs’ #1 pick, Victor Wembanyama, making his debut at the Garden, the 19-year-old had a tough initiation.
The MSG faithful cheered him during introductions, but his struggles on the court were evident. Wembanyama managed 14 points but made just one field goal in the first three quarters, shooting 4-14 overall.
The MSG crowd, never one to hold back, got under his skin after a tussle with Immanuel Quickley, chanting “Overrated! Overrated!”
Mitchell Robinson, true to his word, neutralized the young rookie with stellar defense, tallying 8 points and 12 rebounds.
Jeremy Sochan led the Spurs with 16 points, complemented by Malaki Branham’s 14 points and a 12-point contribution off the bench from Tre Jones. Despite their efforts, the Spurs succumbed to a relentless Knicks defense that forced 13 turnovers while committing only 4.
Up-next: The Knicks (4-4) will host the Charlotte Hornets (2-5) on Sunday at noon.
