– The Tampa Bay Lightning At New York Rangers game was on MSG. The Rangers broadscaster(s) said you can find the Knicks pre-game on MSG 2 while the Rangers game and post-game were on MSG until 3:30 PM. I don’t get that so I watched a little bit of the pre-game on MSGGo.com.

– In the pre-game clips of the first NBA game, which was between the New York Knicks and Toronto Huskies, was shown. 25 year old interviews from the players who participated in it were also shown between the game footage and also the audio of the interviews played over the footage. Bill Pidto said all the players who participated in that game have passed. For that game on November 1st, 1946 Pidto said fans who were taller than Toronto’s tallest player, 6’8″ George Nostrand, had free admission. Bill said Wally and Alan Hahn would barely make it, and he would definitely have to pay.

– Before the game a nice shot of the beautifully decorated Christmas tree outside of Scotiabank Arena was shown.

– Alan asked Wally in the post-game where he would rank Fred VanVleet among NBA starting PGs, and asked him if he’d be in the top 15. Wally said he’d put him in the top 10.

Notable Commentary By Wally And Breen

• Mike Breen asked Wally Szczerbiak what he likes the most about Alec Burks’ game and Wally said Burks really has no weakness in his game and is always ready for whatever role is asked of him. Breen then said Fred VanVleet is like that.
• In the first quarter Breen joked about sitting back and letting the Raptors PA announcer take over the commentary since he’s much easier to hear since there’s no fans in the audience. Later in the quarter Breen laughed in reaction to the PA announcer, still being amused by it.
• A graphic of Obi Toppin’s stat-line from New York at Toronto from a few weeks ago on December 10th was shown which Wally and Breen talked about and one of them said it was his first career double-double (19 pts, 10 rbs).
• In the second quarter Breen said to Wally that he thinks they owe it to the Toronto PA announcer to find out his name ’cause he’s on their telecast so much. Then Wally said, “it’s a three man booth!”. A little bit after that Breen mentioned his name, Herbie Kuhn, then soon after he was shown on camera. Breen said he always has energy.
• Breen and Wally were talking about and praising Fred VanVleet’s college and NBA career. VanVleet’s backcourt mate in college and former Knick Ron Baker was mentioned. Wally said he thinks VanVleet is the highest paid undrafted player in league history. After that Breen said VanVleet has the highest scoring record in Raptors franchise history, 54 pts. In the beginning of the 4th quarter Breen said VanVleet is the leading scorer of this current Raptors team.
• Mike Breen shared a tweet he read one time which read, “the fans are the oxygen of pro sports”, which he said is a perfect line and Wally agreed.
• Breen shared a little background story on VanVleet growing up. VanVleet’s father was killed when he was young. Later on his mom re-married to a cop. VanVleet’s stepfather was hard on him growing up because he wanted him to get away from all the crime going on around them. He used to wake him up at 5 AM to work out.
• After Toronto cleared their bench since they had a big lead in the 4th Dalano Banton got playing time who Breen said is the Raptors’ first ever Canadian player to be drafted by the franchise.
• Wally asked Breen who he has winning the title this year. Wally said he has the Nets. Breen discussed Wally’s pick, but never gave his 0wn. Maybe Breen didn’t want to because he was confused and disappointed in Wally’s pick since he didn’t give the obvious and correct pick, which is the Knicks.
• In the fourth quarter Breen said coming up in the post-game Bill Pidto would be sharing his 16 New Year’s resolutions. THIS DIDN’T HAPPEN. I didn’t type down the one Breen did mention which was something to do with his sleeves or whatever I think because I was expecting this segment to occur.

MSG 150 – Fast Notes

Nuggets/Rockets – Most of the half-time 150 was about the meltdown the Rockets and head coach Steven Silas had to deal with. Facundo Campazzo’s bounce pass through Christian Wood’s legs to JaMychal Green who hammered it home was shown. After that Nikola Jokic was shown stealing the ball, leading the fast break, dribbling behind the back to avoid his defender, then throwing it up to Bol Bol for the ally-oop dunk. The Nuggets blew them out.

Bulls/Wizards – DeMar DeRozan pumped faked then hit a three from the corner for the game-winner. Pidto said DeRozan became the first player in NBA history to hit back to back game-winners, one on New Year’s Eve and one on New Year’s Day.

Warriors/Jazz – In the pre-game last night Klay Thompson was shown sped-up hitting 24 corner three-pointers in a row. Pidto said the Warriors expect him back soon. In the game Andre Iguodala was shown with a put-back dunk. Warriors won.

Pistons/Spurs – In OT last night Derrick Walton Jr. drove in the lane then threw a bounce pass through Jakob Poeltl’s legs to Saddiq Bey in the corner who was covered by Poeltl and Keldon Johnson then threw up a three to take the lead and win the game 117-116 with 1.9 left.
